GPS Mounting Location

http://www.arkon.com/manuals/GN047.pdf

Check out this mounting system for an aftermarket nav. Mine just arrived...$5.85 on Amazon (free shipping if you're a Prime member) and it works very well. Good fit and holds well...not flimsy. They also make models for TomTom and other non-GPS devices too.

(Coil cord is Valentine V1)

Don't know about TomTom, but Garmin has internal battery good for many hours, so I will just recharge when needed. This location is just inches above power outlet, and I store excess cord in netting on console side in passenger footwell.

I just power mine from the cig lighter socket for long runs. I'm sure a more elegant solution is possible. We use mine across 3 vehicles

Andy,

The power cord adapter on my Garman that works off of a cigar lighter has a built in step down transformer. Not a 100% sure but I think it takes the 12 volts down to 5 volts.

oh wow then I dont think the cig. lighter will work in this case. I probably need to check the rear view mirror see if it has any source of power .

That is a neat device. Unfortunately the shipping costs prevent us from getting it that cheap out here. Do you not lose a lot of airflow from that vent as a result?

I use the wheel control to shut off that vent, and the air simply is distributed among the others.....slight change in airflow sound.

Sportstick,

Does that device have the potential to damage the vents?

JimPap,

I think it will depend on the user. If care is used to be sure the alligator clips are fully open and the unit is placed/removed without undue force, it seems to be unlikely any damage will occur. They also recommend holding the bracket with one hand while latching/unlatching the actual GPS from its attachment, again, so as not to place an excessive load on the vent. There is also a fold out "foot" which helps support the load against the bottom vent frame. This all sounds more tedious than it really is, but it's actually very slick, and I tend to treat all devices with care. I've installed and removed this several times so far, and I know that I will not damage the vents. But, for example, I would not ask my loving spouse to use it, as she treats mechanical objects with force.*

*P.S. On second thought, this is actually a combination of comedy and tragedy to observe. She cannot bring herself to just touch a button to actuate it...she either slaps or punches them! Somehow, she thinks this is "quicker". On the other hand, it drives her nuts how carefully I take care of "objects". Sound familiar, anyone?

Oh my! - sounds very familiar!

The TomTom vent mount will certainly scratch the louvres if handled by the ham fisted.

I thought I got a deal at $5.....at this rate, order a dozen and pass them out as party favors!!! That is the same Arkon one I first posted? Different photo and source.

Just handle with care and move gently, and you will have no regrets.

Thats how I do mine and if you move it all the way to the right, you can still see most of your radio screen.
