are you guys seriously having this discussion? it's a 7gear triptronic. Dont really need to use D1 for slow traffic, car will jerk way too often. Use D2 or Auto instead and keep D1 for when you really need it (e.g. running away from police)

I think you need to work on your basic understanding of how engine and transmissions work together. You can't simply say a particular gear is for fast...do you mean fast acceleration from a start or fast on the expressway...two totally differnt things.
Until you get a better understanding of this, you may want to simply keep you car in drive.

This feature in our transmission is a gear limiter, so if it says D1, the car won't shift out of first. This applies for D2, D3, etc. To go to best gear to pass someone you hold it to the left, then hold it to the right when you want to put it back to normal. Another way of thinking about this is forcing downshifts and ALLOWING upshifts.
This is all in our user's manual, be sure to check it out: http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/#/servPrtsOwnersManuals/

Is there a guide around here for using this? I've played around with it a few times, but still do not fully grasp the concept and all the little things you can do and shouldn't do.

Oh thanks for the clarification of the rev limiter. I never actually have needed to have that happen but it's good to know.
As for the tricks of it, it's all explained in the manual, link's above ^

Am I looking in the wrong place? 09 C-class manual in Controls in detail>Automatic transmission. Looked through that whole section on automatic transmission and didn't really get much out of it. I have no knowledge of driving a manual, so I don't really understand what all the numbers mean when I'm using the one-touch gearshifting.
