Subwoofer Size Advice
I'm looking to put a sub in my C, but I'm not sure what size to go with, a 10" (Jl W3)or 12" (Jl W7). I'm looking for a tight, punchy bass rather than a big, boomy bass.
Anybody that has one of the two sizes please chime in.
Thanks

10 will be tighter bass... you will definitely lack the lows.
but the w7 sounds incredible and @ 12" its the perfect balance between low and tight bass... imo
fell in love with it when a heard it a few years back...
the mtx 9500 is another competitor for best 12" i've heard... low as hell and can get that machine gun bass.
imo if you're going 10" get 2

The W7 is overkill. The W6 is a fantastic overall sub.
Have you considered Image Dynamics? Incredible performance and prices are decent depending on which series you choose.

I have the Prowedge 10W6 and it's great, the enclosure also fits perfectly behind the rear seat and under the rear deck, the w7 will not fit there as it is too high. Run this with a JL 500w mono amp and you will be amazed.

That is a great sub/amp setup. Great option for people who don't want all the hassle of a custom made box. JL is INCREDIBLE!

What I did was this, got a 12 shallow mount in a small ported box. enough to fit the right air size application it calls for and shallow mount so i still got trunk space. the shallow mount hits like a 10" but produces lower notes cause of the size of the speaker. i love it. its perfect.

1) Are you using a cleansweep?
2) If you are not using a cleansweep how does it sound without it? You just use the MM "Bass" controls?
3) If no cleansweep, do you just tap into the sub wire in the trunk amp and its purely a "sub" signal?

Norm, I have a 12w7 prowedge and a 500/1, that I will have professionally installed soon. I have a couple of questions for you:
1) Are you using a cleansweep?
2) If you are not using a cleansweep how does it sound without it? You just use the MM "Bass" controls?
3) If no cleansweep, do you just tap into the sub wire in the trunk amp and its purely a "sub" signal?

I went to best buy today and told them that i want one 10" sub and they told me two things that i am not sure about:
1. I will need more than just one sub, two 10" subs at a minimum. Reason being that the MB cars are sealed so well that the sound will not make it to the cabin if I just use one 10" sub. I was planning on going with something like one low end 10".
2. They said due to the fact that I have HK in my car, that they will need to remove my factory sub and rewire the whole thing with the new sub. This will add about $200 to the intall price.
I am skeptical to believe them, can anyone please give me some advice?
TIA!

I'm not sure about one sub not being enough. The only way is to try it, if you're not satisfied then you can add another later on. It's a lot easier to buy another sub from best buy than to try to return one that you bought.
You don't need to remove the HK sub. You just need to disable it. That's as simple as clipping the wires.

I'd really like to save on size, thats why I want one 10" at most... or maybe an efficient 12" if necessary. but just afraid that I wont hear it.
Problem with adding a sub is that I might not have enough power if I buy an amp to power just one sub.

Why would anyone disable the HK sub?
Just tap into the HK sub high level signal (speaker wire) to feed the JL 500/1.
The reason for the 10w6 prowedge is that it is a perfect fit behind the seat, you would swear it was designed for this car.
Use the JL 500/1 internal crossover and attenuation.
As for not enough bass, let me tell you this sub will pressurize the inside of my car to the point of hurting my ears due to pressure, it's more than enough. If installed properly with a quick disconnect it can be removed in seconds from the trunk.
I previously posted full install instructions with pics on here and wiring information, one thing to note on the HK system, due to the surround 5.1, low bass is filtered to the factory sub, if you use the high level signal from the rear speakers as some have done you will not get the true bass signal, you need to take it from the factory sub. Hope this helps.

If anyone cares, here's me... I love my set up, matches perfectly with HK system plus I got a volume knob under the steering wheel that I can dial in how much bass I want for the sub's amp. Still got plenty of trunk space and this speaker shakes the car. its a 12" Carbon Fiber shallow mount Excelon

do those shallow mount subs hit hard & loud? or does it just sort of fill in the deep notes? Ive always wondered about those because I would think that they are sort of weak since they dont have big magnets & take up so little air space...

I know its no W7, but thats not what I was going for. To me its a perfect match!
