PCMCIA slot fixed...I have a question...
When I picked up my car a few weeks ago, my PCMCIA slot wasn't working. Finally got it to the dealer a few days ago, they replaced the whole radio for me. Took a few days - they had to order the parts. They said the pins were bent. Anyways, seems like everything is in working order now. I do have a PCMCIA card for a SD card. My question is - has anyone tried using one of these?
Cheap on eBay, but figured I'd save myself a few bucks if it won't work.
When they replaced the radio, they had to re-install all of the Nav Maps - and they left the DVD in my car when they were done. Already had the newest maps, but didn't have the DVD.

i don't think those will work man, i tried it with a PCMIA/ wireless card jsut to see if it fits b4 i buy one.. but na the USB end will get in the way and won't go all the way in.
But QUESTION: how many gig r u able to use on the PCMIA to SD?? i can only do max 2gb..... (which is crappy)...... more than 2GB it won't read the card.
And is it possible for u to burn that DVD?... i would like the newest map.. hehe

I'm not sure, I only tried a 2GB card - it's all I had laying around. I have the iPod interface, so didn't need to use it for music. I only wanted it to load my contacts since the iPhone doesn't sync.
As for "making a backup copy" - I'm not sure, didn't try. I read online that people had problems doing it, and I didn't have any dual layer DVD's at home. It's on eBay right now though haha.

That thing should indeed fit because all PCMCIA card must fit in the exact same size slot... one can't be longer/shorter than another, its a standard. You will have that big, bulky end sticking out of your dash though.
As to whether it will work, that's another story, I don't know. Depends on how closely yhey support the PCMCIA spec and power requirements and aslo if there software can support many devices. I'm not sure what you were trying to do sticking a wireless card in there though! I'm sure that would do nothing!
I just bought an I-Connect CF reader from Frys, sits flush in the slot and I'm using an 8GB CF card and so far it works perfectly.

Yes, using CF 8GB. Make sure if you try to use over to 2GB that you are using SDHC and that you PCMCIA card supports that. The car doesn't seem to have a problem reading the larger capacity.

But you should check if the card you have supports SDHC. I'm guessing not. SDHC supports over 2GB.

Command will read cards >2g your PCMCIA reader has to be SDHC compatable. I hav e 16g CF in my car now, I have used a 8g SD in the past. Both my readers are no names I had laying around the office not being used.

Hoping the USB will work so I can use a memory stick instead of a SD card. Easier to load data on a stick than an SD card. I'll buy one on eBay and let you guys know what happens.

I'm getting my cable tomorrow and will test it out to see which loads faster, USB stick or PCMCIA/CF.

I agree with Ron, i thought about the USB PCMCIA too.. but i think it's too ugly and i'll be mad looking at something sticking out of the dash. cuz imagine the USB PCMCIA sticks out like 1'' and on top of that another 1-2'' of USB flash drive.

I just want to use it to sync my Address Book files via a USB memory stick. Not to use it the whole time while driving for music. I have the iPod interface for that.

I'd rather keep my ipod safe in my pocket or at home. USB memory sticks are cheap... the interface on MM is great.

iPod interface on the MY2010 is great too. I have an older 30Gb iPod that I used before iPhones came out. Blew the dust off of it and just leave it in my glovebox. Works great.
I still haven't tried the Aux in or Music Register yet. Usually using the iPod or Sirius.

Funny thing... got the Media Interface USB cable from the dealer. Overpriced at $55, dealer gave it to me for $40, still overpriced. Plugged in my 8GB USB Stick and it tells me device is incompatible! I'll have to try with a difference stick.
I'm mostly interested to see if USB loads faster than the PCMCIA card.

Have you looked at the restrictions from the manual? I cannot remember those but it is likely that you have to install multiple partitions to be able to make use of the full memory from big USB sticks (4 GB sounds like should not be any issue as a single partition).

I'm using an 8GB CF card in the PCMCIA slot no problem, so it doesn't seem to be a file system issue in the OS of the car.
FYI, I tried a portable 160GB USB hard disk, no go either.
I will play around with this some more.

I guess I can try to partition it into two 4GB partitions but that seems kind of lame and the music will all be separated... I have folders with artist name, then album, etc, and it will now no longer be sorted together.
