2011 C - Felt Rear Wheel Well Liners??

I took delivery of a 2011 C 300 luxury over the weekend (factory order as I wanted the lighting package ) and I notice that the material of rear wheel well liners looks and feels like a type of felt. The front wheel well liners are smooth plastic. I find this really odd. Seems to me this felt-ish material is going to soak up moisture, dirt, etc. Or maybe it's really some space-age compound that repels dirt and water and never needs cleaning ? Anyone else's C have this? Anyone have an explanation?

all of our c class are like that. i owned a 07 c230 before the 09 c300 and same thing. i have no idea why its like that. i just figured that all others are like that so i won't question it being like that.

It's got to be for sound deadening, I found it weird at first also but the car has very little road noise so I won't question it too much.

its there to deaden the sound of rocks when they fling up inside and bounce around. 3 of my dealer techs all agreed to this.

yes it is to deaden the sound from debris getting caught in the wheel arches. however, what it actually does is trap leaves and twigs and they stick to the felt

Thanks everyone for the explanation. I figured that leaves and twigs would stick to the felt. Here's a pic of my new ride, certainly an upgrade from my former 2005 C!

Gorgeous looking car! Enjoy it.

Yeah, you'll appreciate not hearing rocks hitting the wheel wells, etc, with that insulation there.
