Rwd C300 snow day!

Today I had a chance to take my rwd c300 for a drive on snow and it will be my last! This car has horrible stability with just an inch of snow. (this was before the storm hit) I thought these tires had better grip? Are they all seasons(conti)?? I had a pontiac g8 gt with 361hp and 385 torque and performed great in the snow compared to my c300. WTF!!?? Does this car have a LSD??

X3 and 2012 C coming soon
I have a set of winter wheels and tires for mine and it was absolutely amazing and unstoppable in the snow last year. What tires did your G8 have?

You probably have summer tires, or weak all season tires. If you plan on taking a RWD car out in the snow you better have winter tires.

We've had this discussion many times, but for the newcomers...the original equipment tires on all cars are primarily designed for fuel economy to help the manufacturer with their CAFE requirements. This means using a harder rubber compound for reduced rolling resistance. Therefore, the OE tires are even worse in freezing temperatures or on snow than aftermarket tires with the same apparent brand name. There are no truly "all season" tires, unless your seasons are limited to the weather in the south. Even if the tread is sufficiently aggressive, the rubber compound is not soft enough to maintain traction below 40 degrees F or so. Of all tires claiming to be "all season", Continental DWS seem to do the best (nothing like the OE Contis on your car), but they still are not comparable to true winter tires.

There is nothing wrong with your car. When I first received my car in November 2008, I tried it in the snow and it was just about undriveable, similar to your report. But, now I drive my rwd car throughout the Michigan winters and do fine. The solution is to have snow tires, such as Blizzak WS70. Because the compound is softer, they will wear more quickly and with careful timing for installation/removal, expect about 3, maybe 4, seasons.

No we don't have an LSD...wish we did. We could benefit under normal driving.

I dont need to use it in the snow because of my work truck, i just wanted to test it. The G8 I had , came with goodyear all seasons and a limited slip diff. I guess that makes big difference.

The limited slip helped. Having the majority of the vehicle weight over the driving wheels helped. The Goodyear all season tires did not help.

I have stock all season Michelins and they sucked on 1 inch snow. Car slides like crazy and won't move in small hills. Same tires on Honda FWD performed perfectly on 5 inches of snow. Simply RWD is not so good for the snow, yes it will perform well with dedicated winter tires, but with all seasons not for winter driving on RWD cars.

4MATIC in the snow

For those of you that are wondering about 4MATIC performance in the snow/ice. I was up in the mountains for last week with my C350 4MATIC and OEM all season tires, and I must say that I was impressed how it drove in the snow. No sliding, no slippage. Some of our friends were there with Infinity RWD with all season tires and got stuck all over the place. I had no issue whatsoever..

When the snow started in Southern Maryland Sunday - I was already out with my C300 with the Conti DWS tires.

There was 2" of snow on the road and still accumulating. The DWSs did not lose traction. I was running between 35-45 mph, tried rolling the wheel left and right in an attempt to cause a fish tail - but it didn't happen. I didn't whip it (didn't want to be in the ditch with the 4x4 Explorers and pick ups).

Amazing tires - like others have said, it's the tires, not the car!
