The cheaper navigation system
The cheaper navigation system
Hey all, I wanted to ask these of u who installed the cheaper navigation system that works with the stock 5 inch screen In their c300 and if it's worth getting? If u buy that u automaticlly get the iPod integration kit too right swell as the USB connector to connect a harddrive and what not?
I added the UMI ( Universal Media Interface ) to my 2008 after I bought it and I am pleased with the purchase. The nav works fine, but what I really like is the full iPod display on the screen and full control. The USB is also a nice feature, I have loaded a ton of music on a thumb drive and keep it connected in the glove box. The Bluetooth streaming is a nice feature, but for me the quality of the audio varies ( haven't figured out why yet ). Live traffic is nice, but only works on the expressways ( when I get closer to the city ). For the price ( I paid $1660 installed ) it is well worth it.

But, I do regret not having the Harman Kardon sound system ( I may upgrade my speakers this spring )
Hope that helps...
Nick
Also - it does not charge my iPhone ( but that is fine with me )

The navigation speaks street names and all right? Can u play video from an iPod or a thumb drive on the 5 inch screen? So u get an iPod connector in the glovebox and USB connection in there for thumb drives too right?
Isn't the iPod connector supposed to charge the iPhone though?
And since I'm leasing, it's still worth getting the nav+4? Does the navigation work well? It finds addresses easily?

Can the UMI be installed by the DIYselfer? If I have to leave my car @ the dealership for two weeks to get it done, then forget it! Please reply at your earliest convenience.
lamonsas,
The nav does not pronounce the street names. Also, you cannot play video. Yes, ipod and USB connection in the glove box.
Mine may not charge since I bought it in 2009 - the new UMI / Nav+4 may have the updated cable and may charge though.
I think it's worth it, the Nav works fine for me...
ifilomeno,
I believe the UMI could be self installed ( I had the dealer do mine ) but you will need to bring it to the dealer to enable the nav to show up in the speedo section as well.
( this should have been a one day install, the dealer I brought it to just screwed up )
Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions...

nickcats,
Thanks for your prompt response. where did you purchase the UMI from? I do not even going to try to contact my stealership for this! I got a qoute for a set of C63 AMG Rims\Tires for my C300! it was $7,000 plus some change! Are these people nuts?

since im leasing though, the dealer said he can give me the Nav +4 package for an additional $700 , is it worth it? i mean does the navigation really navigate or it doesnt work/very slow.. ? is it easy to enter an address?(for my wife) , i already have a garmin but the ipod intergration and the usb connection that comes with the nav +4 is what got me thinking, i dont realy need that GPS u know but the music options are needed .. if i dont get that all i will have is auxillary
...then here is your built-in (far superior) Nav for less than six bucks! I've had this for about a year and it works very well! Just close the vent wheel when in use.

$700 sounds like a pretty good deal ( MBUSA website shows $1290 for the Nav +4 UMI and $2700 for the Multimedia Package with the 7" display )
The navigation is hard drive based so it is very quick ( compared to my wife's A4 with DVD based nav ). I find address entry very easy.
If the UMI was only nav I don't think I would have done it, but when you add the ipod and usb and bluetooth audio functions it's a no-brainer.

i see, thats exactly what im thinking man, just for the navigation i wouldnt get it but with all the multimedia features its a really neat package u know..
by bluetooth, what do u mean? it also brings bluetooth features? i think the car already comes with bluetooth functions built in so u can connect your phone to the car but with the NAV +4 package it also gives u other bluetooth features? like bluetooth streaming? so it streams music wireleslly from the iPod/iphone?
a question about the navigation, have you used the navigation and traveled with it? how did it work? does it feel like a cheap navigation system or it feels like a tomtom/garmin system that u can depend on?
And u said it doesnt speak street names, so it only says like "turn left in 500 yards" and stuff like that? What other voice commands does it speak?
And about the lifetime traffic it comes with, i read that it allows u to REROUTE away from traffic, now i dont like that, can i tell the navigation to IGNORE traffic and not reroute me due to heavy traffic or whatever traffic conditions? because usually if it reroutes it takes u via streets with many red lights and what not u know..
thanks alot for helpming me make a decision guys

Yep - you can stream music wirelessly from an iPhone
I used the nav the most when we took a trip to Washington DC last year. It was just as good as the portable Garmin StreetPilot we own.
Yep - turn left in 500 yards, etc.
Yep - you have to choose to reroute around traffic
Yep - it shows restaurants, gas stations, points of interest, etc.
All in all, it's a decent nav.
( take a look at the "UMI Screen Pictures" link in post 3 above and the links in post 15 & 17 in that thread )
