Slower than a Camry ?

Yesterday I went out to lunch with a couple of my co-workers and we started talking about cars ( one drives a Acura TL SH AWD, the other a Camry, and my c350 ). The one that drives the Camry makes the statement "you both know that my car is faster than either of yours, right" ? Of course we didn't believe him, until we got back to the office and did some research :

Acura :

c350 :

Camry :

Camry 5.8 sec 0-60 and 14.3 in the quarter

Benz 6.0 sec 0-60 and 14.6 in the quarter

Acura 6.0 sec 0-60 and 14.8 in the quarter

To which I would say, "So, what?" He can have his two-tenths of second, for whatever effect that has on his quality of life, and which is inherently unreliable, as no two drivers or even the same driver can perfectly launch each car the same...how much revving while holding the brakes before launching, and all the other variables, such as temperature of the surface and tires, humidity, etc. The test drivers at my company's track admitted to being human! These speed comparisons are close to meaningless and are the last refuge of desperation to find some way to compare lunch at McDonalds to dining at the Four Seasons (Hey, I got one more gram of protein!!). More relevant is what is missing in his automotive life that he has no appreciation nor understanding that he drives the equivalent of novocaine. I had the task of driving a new Camry just placed in rental service recently. It would not matter how fast it accelerated...low grade interior, awful handling, unresponsive steering, all directed at older, non-car involved folks simply looking to get from A to B with as little emotion of any type as possible. Try this...ask him what he likes best about his car one day after a little time goes by. I bet he says, "I never have any trouble with it." That's the be-all and end-all for the vast majority of Toyota folks.

You're car is still much, much nicer than a Toyota Camry. Enjoy your car!

5.8 Sec 0-60mph? I have had tons of Camry rental cars and it did not feel like a 5.8 0-60 time. Maybe the one they tested in Car and Driver had a 2JZ Swap

Motorttend has the 350 at 5.8 seconds which doesn't really matter the two numbers are so close anyway . If you raced him you should win since your has arch sportier nature than his . I had a 2007 camry 4 cylinder ... Slow as s**t lol . If the two of you raced he would be owned because the camry is not made with fast driving in mind where as the Benz is made to live on the autobahn .

both cars weight about 3500lbs and both cars have the same amount of hp 268. given that both cars are 3.5l v-6 i wouldnt be surprise if the race was dead even to tell you the truth. in theory i assume the guy driving the c350 was alittle overweight when testing the car times

Haha I would just say, your car may be 2 tenths of a second faster to 60, but how many times has a cute girl asked you... "WOW, is that YOUR Camry??"

+1.

A guy tried to race me in a minivan not that long ago... I know.. I know.. I think he musta had a bad day at work and didn't like that I got in front of him.

Anyway, I'm not usually one to race -- in fact, I never do as a rule -- but in this case this dude was FLOORING it, driving in the turn-lane, etc.

He kept at my heels until we got to twisties. I did them at 60mph -- I live right near there and take them regularly at 50 -- he probably would have rolled that van had he tried to keep up.

But also +1 on who cares if it's faster. There are a lot of faster cars for $40k. Did any of you buy it for raw speed? Performance is important but not just speed and not THAT important.

Well I do look to drive fast so speed was a factor but not so much as to deter me from the c . The 335 is way faster but I don't like the way it looks onside and I fond the car basically boring to look at . Prestige , performance , and personal taste is what brought me to my choice .

2012 C250 Coupe
I absolutely hate the camry. It is so ugly and the interior so cheap. I understand it is a sub $20,000 car, but I would much rather take a kia forte koup or some other kia/hyundai.

On the stance of power. Yes, the v6 (which nobody really buys) is pretty fast, a decent sleeper. But has TERRIBLE reliability problems, when compared with the rest of the toyota fleet or the 4-cylinder version. Not to mention its FWD, the only thing that is good for is going in a straight line. And even than it will have its problems pulling to one side. I think during a real world scenario, the race would be much closer, and the c350 would have the edge.

Now compare that with the new c350 for 2012, and its a different story. Finally a proper performance oriented v6 c-class.

It can be faster but let's see who can corner at high speeds better? An who will stop first?
Ja Ja Ja
Don't try to go fast in a Camry, it can never be control as a Mercedes

To even compare it to any German vehicle is not fair . The camry is a great car for it's target market . It's a very safe and reliable car I even I like the looks of the refreshed version . The two cars are built for different people therefore different needs and wants of their vehicles .

Funny you mention this, I came from a 3 series and was looking at 335's when I found the C350, fell in love of the looks - very content with the performance...I was at the store the other day and took this side by side, confirms my choice style wise was a good one in my opinion...
