When do tires need to be replaced ?
BTW, I had an A service and a transmission flush done.
A service
$83 parts / $67 labor - $150 total
Trans
$140 parts / $210 labor - $350 total
Thanks,
Nick

Of course, you now have the rationale to get four really great tires!!
(most likely I will go w/ Michilen Pilot Sport A/S Plus and get it done in the summer together w/ alignment)
$500 for service A & transmission fluid flush is about right, I paid $500.01 a couple month ago for the exact same service..
I'm going to stay with the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4. I am actually really pleased with these tires, and the dealer quoted $500 installed ! I was amazed - they are $265 each on tire rack...
( yes - I was suprised they charged $150 for the A service as well )

Are you sure you don't want at least Primacy MXV4 in the same category?

I had the Michelins also....I went to Tire Rack and looked at their road comparison tests of the Ultra HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES the Continental Extreme Contact was superior in every test in ice /snow /wet acceleration and breaking and they`re cheaper so I went with the Continental E.C. All I can say it transformed the ride this tire is much smoother/ quieter everything is better I`m overwhelmed at the difference plus they have a 50000 mile wear warranty I believe all four installed for $750

Just a thought though...the 48 million miles of reports likely are due to the frequency with which that tire is used as OE equipment, in of itself, not a great endorsement! All that data solidly cements the rating toward the bottom of the pack. However, with 5 million miles of reports, assuming an average of 20,000 miles per reporter, the sample size is 250, which is a large and stable sample. When I did market research, we were happy to have 75-100 respondents per cell for a reasonable standard deviation. So, however you decide, those data are reliable (other than sample bias issues for the whole survey) for both tires.
We also have the MXV4 on one of our kid's Saabs, and they are quite good. You are right that the Conti DWS have gotten better reviews for 18" than for 17", as there is apparently a sidewall construction design difference, which allows the 17" to feel unduly squirmy for the difference in sidewall height.
Best wishes either way!
Hopefully I'll get another 35k miles out of the rear !
Thanks for all the help and advice...
Nick
