Honestly...there is no way a dealer is going to eat an extra 10,000 miles! MAYBE if you're upgrading from a C to an S, CL, or SL...but I highly doubt they're just gonna let that many miles slide if you're going with another C-Class...just too costly for them. Were you not paying attention to your mileage at all to go over by THAT much???
Mercedes does run a special promotion that they will take a car back 5 months early if you re-lease another Mercedes. So if you plan on getting another Benz you may want to look into this then to buy extra miles...whether you buy extra miles now or pay the fees at the end of the lease, it's still going to cost you $$$$$
If you buy additional miles during the lease term and don't use them, I think that you can get that amount refunded but I'm not 100% positive on that. Maybe someone else can either confirm or correct that. I know that you won't get anything refunded if you're under the regular contract mileage and you can't call during the term to reduce your mileage. You can only buy more, not sell any miles back.
Also if you want to pre-purchase more mileage, you don't have to call right at 12 months. You can actually call at any time, probably up to around 90 days to lease expiration as someone else mentioned, but obviously the longer you wait, the fewer months remain over which to spread the amount. However, if you're going to stick with Mercedes for your next car, I wouldn't pre-purchase any additional mileage because you very well may be able to get at least some of your overage waived as a sort of "loyalty discount."
Regarding whether you have any obligation to notify them during the lease term that you're over mileage, you don't have to do that. You just show up at your turn-in and they look at the final reading on the odometer.
MBFS pretty much always waives the turn-in fee if you lease or finance another Mercedes through them. Sometimes they'll also waive some excess wear and tear up to a certain amount, say $500 or so. They won't waive overdue maintenance and typically don't waive mileage but the dealer might offer an incentive for that.
