Emergency fuel filler flap release

I pulled the emergency release out of its place and it seems no way I could put it back in. I didn't pull it very hard. Next time I will let dealer put it in place.

Must be something new. Mine doesn't have a release. When the doors are unlocked- I can open it by pushing in on the door itself.

I assume it has happened, or MB tries to avoid that when doors are unlocked the fuel door is still locked (a malfunction). This pull for emergency release is too cheaply designed in my opinion. It is made of some plastic not thick enough. One end is a rectangular loop which connect somewhere close to fuel mechanism nobody is able to see and hand feel it. I'd say it should be made of metal or strong plastic, permanently attached.

I guarantee you have one. Check your owner's manual. The emergency release is accessed from inside the trunk. The normal use of the gas flap is to push on it but if it malfunctions (doesn't unlock), the emergency release allows you to still put gas in the car. For a 2011 C Class, this is on page 146. It may or may not be the same page for other years.

The manual only covers pulling it out. It doesn't say anything about putting it back into place. I've never had to use it on any car so I just assumed that it either went back into place on its own (like on a spring) or you just pushed it back as easily as you pulled it out.

OK. i had to go out to my car and find this thing. You can't see it, but I reached up inside and located the release. Mine pulled and pushed like a plunger. It did not seem to have a return spring on it.

Three years ago when I first bought the car I checked out the fuel filler cap release. I pulled it a little too hard & broke the plastic connecting loop at the release itself.

The connecting loop is a very fine piece of plastic about 1 to 2 mm in diam. It is absolutely ridiculously flimsy piece of equipment.

It has no apparent "feel" to let you know it has been activated. It should reset itself if you have not pulled too hard.

My dealer replaved it under warranty.

I have not been game to touch it since.

My connecting loop is not broken, the pull just slipped out of the connection. Therefore, even I can make a pull out of a metal wire, it might slip out again, due to the way it connects to the other part.

I tried to feel where it connects to, and didn't feel anything like a push pull. Will let dealer put it back and never touch it. Such a 'strong' car with a very 'weak' release pull...

Today dealer put it back. The service advisor said they have to remove trunk trim pieces to get access to it.

I will not touch it again and hopefully I will never need to use it.
