Problems filling tank on 2011 C300.

Hi, I have filled my tank 3 times since I picked it up 2 weeks ago. Twice, I had a hard time filling the tank. The gas trigger would not stay in the auto fill position. I could only barely move the trigger and it takes me forever to fill up the tank.

Today when it happened, I moved to a different pump and the same thing happened. I saw someone else pull up to the first pump I used and they filled it up with no problems.

Any ideas/advice.

Thanks.

don't stick it all the way in (that's what she said?), try pulling it a quarter of the way out and see if it works.

I've been having the same problem for about two weeks now with my 2009. Even setting the trigger on the first notch usually makes it kick off early. I have to look at my gas guage to make sure the tank is full. I thought about taking it to the dealership and have them look at it.

I did try this, putting it in at different depths. Didn't help.

This can also depend on the station. For example, Costco uses one of the highest flow rates in the industry to shorten refill time. It tends to create spashbacks unless on the low handle setting, but the pressure also can cause the shutoff sensor to kick off the flow prematurely. Is your problem happening at different stations or the same one each time?

You have to push the nozzle past the flap that is just inside the filler but even so, the last gallon takes a while to dribble in. I do ignore the "do not top off" warning because that last gallon will take me another twenty miles.

Every C is the same and yet this is the first time this has come up.

I realize the depth of your background, but for others reading here, the general purpose of the "Do Not Top Off" warning is to prevent flooding the charcoal canister with gasoline, which is intended to help trap fuel vapors from escaping as part of the emissions control system. Flooding it renders it inactive.

I am quite well aware of that but since the canister is self venting, I ignore it. BTW, every MB I've owned has been slow to fill at the last. Even my diesel.

FYI, this is not in regards to the last gallon, this is from the beginning.

Also, I have taken my car to 3 different stations on the 3 occasions.

I've had this issue as well. It seems to come and go but has happened no less than five times IIRC.

I worried at first, but then noticed applying inwards and upwards pressure seems to fix the problem.

Note: I fuel up almost exclusively @ Exxon.

I have experienced the same problem (perhaps with a 10% encounter rate), albeit at different stations, and randomly. I've always just assumed the problem lay with the particular pump, and not my car.

It would be interesting for a few folks to obtain an indicative flow rate ie gallons or parts there of a minute.

This should give a better comparison between forum members & their cars.

BTW my 220CDI fills very quickly right up to the neck ...even without foam which was always a problem in other vehicles . It is a very good design INO

Have you tried mounting the gas handle upside down? (as in instead of the handle of the nozzle coming out of the car and heading down towards the car, it should head up towards the sky). Also, does this same issue happen if you hold it by hand instead of leaving it on a setting?

Yes, I get the problem occasionally with hand held filling. I assumed it was a particularly feisty pump coming up against the anti-syphon device on MBs?

Where I fill up, there is one pump that's click off every few seconds. I have to remember to not try to use that one. Their other 11 pumps seem to work fine. In my opinion, there must be something about the pumps you are using.

Does the pump have a collar like this? I have had problems not getting it in far enough to have it flow.

Speaking of Costco... The reason I clicked on this thread was because the same thing happened to me at Costco this past weekend, where (as someone already posted) I had to check the fuel gauge to know when I got to full. Can't say I remember it happening during the entire fill before this time.

Oh and by the way, I love the fact that MB fills on the right side... It seems that the lines at Costco are always much shorter for right siders than for left... Hahaaa

Those sleeves are required by law in California... At least for gas pumps (don't think that applies to diesel).

I was struggling at the pump and a State Trooper filling his police car next to me showed me to turn the nozzle sideways and pull back a little. It's not 100% effective, but it does work a little bit better.

As for overfilling... I recently saw a story on the news stating that some pumps are designed to return the fuel back to the filling station if the tank in the car is full to limit spillage to the ground. You are effectively giving gas back to the station when you do this.
