"Disc unreadable" ?

Anyone ever experienced your cd player giving this error? I searched but only came up with that error displaying when burning on to a DVD (which I'm not nor have the capability). I'm burning (using windows media player) to a cd a few mp3's since the iPod sound quality is so poor. Now I've ran in to another problem, the first disc I made gave me "disc unreadable" tried ejecting and reinserting to no avail. So I made another making sure the files were correct and not corrupted. All was fine, now this disc plays but every other song or two the disc would stop and give the same error. I have to eject and reinsert to get it to play again.

Now I tried using that same disc in my pc and a laptop and another vehicle and it worked flawlessly. Is there a certain (cd) brand I should use and/or burner I should try? I feel like lol.

Thanx for any input or suggestions,
Eric

I have this problem w DVD music videos sometimes. Its the brand of CD for me, I can burn the same tracks to a SONY with no probs and then a memorex does this. With CDs I did notice in my 08 that burning with Roxio or alcohol 120% worked perfect, windows would sometimes error or skip/stutter. I purchased some mix dvds online last month after getting my VIM installed and most of them would skip or stutter kindof. I searched online and a guy w a carputer suggested playing them 1-2 times fully in a computer or home system and then trying them. This actually worked for me, 5 out of the 6 DVD mixes now play smooth, so its safe to say the MB players are really picky about their media. The ones that are picky play no prob in my friend RAPTOR w the sync/sony multimedia system so go figure

The "service guy" is trying to get rid of you.

Be persistent. I have burned more ITunes music to CDs on my Mac than I can recall and all transferred to my MM HD with no problems as long as I record them in the correct format. None of the song info appears unfortunately so finding something is a test of my memory.

ok so im back at square one with this. I originally started this thread when I first got the car and it seems I had to change the name brand of cds i was using. once I did that it was working fine. Now almost a year later im getting the same thing, "disc unreadable". Now this is happening with EVERY cd meaning burned as well as store purchased. I cant get it to read any disc. Ive cleaned them, I even went and purchased a new cd opened the package and got the same "disc unreadable".

Does anyone know of any options I can take as my warranty is up and dont wanna get raped. thanks!

If it won't play any CD now, I would be suspicious that you have an optic problem. Might only be dirt.

Thanks for the reply. My initial thought was that also, that maybe the laser might have went. I think I'll try to buy one of those disc cleaners and see what happens. It's so annoying having to listen to the radio though. Might force me to get XM again which I don't want.

Can anyone explain why my cd player can The Roots "undun" cd while displaying the album name and song title, but wont do the same with my Yellowcard "When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes" cd? They're both store-bought cds and not burnt ones.

@Dark Kent: If your iPod volume s too low, get a PHP Sound Shocker from the website:
www.phpaudio.com

Most CD laser assemblies are suspended with tiny rubber bands so that the servo motor can make minute adjustments while keeping the laser shock resistant. Vehicles that are parked in the sun tend to have the laser tracking fail because these bands get hard.

If your car is still in warranty and wont play with a regular store-bought "Red Book" standard CD, or if this only occurs with MP3 CDs, then get the dealer to fix it or as another suggested get an update. If not, consider changing to using an iPod with the PHP Sound Shocker. Also, Apple Lossless format s highly recommended, most MP3 encodings are extremely sonically inferior.

Thanks Acapulco! Great information. Unfortunately my car is no longer under warranty. however if I can get my AUX (iPod) sound better I would much rather use that anyway. The only reason I've resorted to using CD's is because of the extremely low volume of the iPod.

Yes this is happening with brand new store bought CD's as well as burned MP3's. I will visit the site you suggested right now. BTW I created a new thread today asking about a replacement head unit. Do you think that would be necassary if all else fails? If so would you have any idea where to purchase? I've been looking EVERYWHERE.

@Dark Kent: Since the CD collection had grown to almost 1000 titles, it seemed logical that one could have access to everything just buying a 160GB iPod Classic. This simple solution is going to cost less time and aggravation than trying to replace your Audio 20 headunit. The Sound Shocker will solve the insufficient gain problem. There are also iPod chargers available so once loaded with Apple lossless or decent MP3s, it never needs to be removed from your W204.

Set the iPod to Volume "8" and Equalization on "Pop" for best sonic results. I kept 6 of the best recorded CDs in the Audio 20 just to compare it against the iPod Classic and Apple Lossless encoding, and cant tell any difference. Create playlists of your favorite tunes, as a safety measure, because navigating through artists, albums, titles and tunes is extremely distracting and a big safety issue.

While you are at it, replace the stock MB speakers with high quality 3rd party drivers, a well known thread is here:
