Diesel: Which engine oil to use?

Hi guys,

Being a first time diesel owner, I was wondering what engine oils you diesel owners are running in your engines? Any tips or suggestions please?

I have a 2007 C320 turbo diesel....

Thanks in advance

You should use the MB approved oil for modern diesels . The MB spec # is 229.51 .

Take a look in your manual & you will be able to confirm this information.

I suggest picking an oil from the list below which is sold at a resonable price in your locality.I have used Mobil one ESP 5w30 to date in Australia.

If you have a particulate filter make sure you use an oil to suit.

MB sheet 229.51 approved oils; low ash long life Mercedes pioneered this new spec for passenger cars with diesel engines with exhaust particulate filters, and gasoline engines, and longer service life than the 229.31 oils. The spec was introduced in 2005. Change intervals increased to 20,000 kilometers. Based on ACEA A3 B4 and C3.

Thanks the great info posted guys. Really appreciate it.

I did refer to my manual and see the different specs listed, however, how do i find out whether my car comes with a particle filter installed or not? I'm located in Sydney, Australia also....so I'm unsure what the australian spec diesel models come with?

Thanks again guys....

I would say that the car does not come with a DPF but I would check with your dealer.

If you remove your plastic undercover you will see it. It will have sensors before & after it which measure the differential pressure across the filter to tell the engine management system when to regenerate .

My MB mechanic recommended Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 even though my 220CDI does not have a DPF.
