1st long Roadtrip @ 30.3 mpg ;-)
I decided to blast down to SC to visit my parents and brothers during the holiday break for a few days, door to door it is 700 miles each way, the car was a dream to drive...I was cruising quickly through Richmond and clicked through to check my mileage, happily surprised to see I was averaging 30.3 miles per gallon with an average speed of 78 mph after running pretty hard for 300 miles - not too shabby!

I have a c350 as well. Drove 850 miles each way last month for the holidays. Avg was 28.3. Wonder why yours was so different. My Avg MPH was in the high 60's though.

Is it possible you had more of a slow and go traffic pattern? I am a very offensive driver when traveling on the highway (do it daily). I carefully drive very fast and feel safer passing every car on the road than having even 10% of other cars passing me...I realize putting "very fast" and "careful" in the same sentence is confusing, but I feel more confident knowing there are no cars creeping up on either side of me on the highway - In other words, I was driving fast, but steady, all the way down 95 - maybe you were slowing with traffic conditions instead of manuevering through them at more level speeds which would effect gas mileage and average speed...?

My recent trip of 600 miles round trip (mostly highway) with 2012 C300 Lux only gave me 26.4 mpg. The tire pressures of the car are 34/front and 37/back in NJ cold weather. The funny thing is that this is even worse than BMW SUV X5 (which gave me 27.3 mpg in September for the same trip). Both cars use Shell v-power gas (93).

I only average around 21-22 mpg in my C350. I have a tune and exhaust mods so it doesnt help me. On cruise control highway driving the best I can get is 26-27 MPG and I only run 93 all the time. I have MPG envy and HP envy LOL

I see your point. I would say my Cruise was set to 73 about 75% of the time. My overall speed did not go over 77 the whole trip. I tried both comfort and sport mode, and found better luck with comfort. I was using 93 octane. I should also say that I drove from Boston to Detroit- meaning I hit the Pennsylvania mountains along the way
kev10 - I run the tires at the recommended pressure and made sure they were correct before I pulled out - I believe it is 29 front and 34 rear...Shocked on the X5, what motor do you have in that? My wife had a 2004 X5 4.4i that she could barely squeeze 20MPG out of and she drives like a turtle(if turtles drove I suppose).

altawila - I was more in the 75 - 90 range all the way down to South Carolina and there are really no mountains to make the car work harder - when making trips to Penn State I did not hit as high on the MPG's going through PA mountains...I use 93 octane also.

I was surprised by the mpg of the 2012 X5 Xdrive35i as well. The BMW web site says 23 mpg on hwy, but mine hits 26-28 frequently. It has a V6 engine with 300hp. The acceleration, handling, and braking are obviously superior than 2012 C300 Lux. But overall I like C300 slightly better for daily commute, mainly for its quietness, smoothness, and the luxury feel.

I use the pressure listed inside the drivers door - Nice X5, I love the Xdrive 35i, makes more sense why you are getting good mileage too - the older V-8's 4.4 and 4.6 were pretty badass little SUV's, but I would have traded for the turbo 6 in that truck any day...

If you need any work on your car while you are here, check out Motor Werks just where Walnut Lake Road meets Pontiac Trail, just west of Haggerty. Great indy shop! For an actual dealer, MB of Novi is excellent!
