I am gonna get a c63 coupe next. With a good set of winter tires, it should be no problem and actually fun to drive. I drove my 350Z in the Calgary snow with winter tires.

The 17" is better for heavy snow for the following reasons:
1) Narrower Contact Patch
The 18" will have a smaller aspect ratio, like 18" 40 series vs 17" 45 series to get same OD. Usually the larger aspect ratio tire (45 series vs 40 series) will have a narrower contact patch which will cut through the snow better. You can see the contact patch when going from a wet driveway into a dry garage.
2) More Room for Snow in Wheel Wells
A subtle effect that works with the narrower contact patch. A little narrower tire near the treads, that avoids packing the wheel wells with so much snow that the suspenson can't compress properly.

I had 18" rims as my stock my one's and got the winter tires put on those. I had Bridgestone Blizzaks...they are one of the best winter tires you can get.
