What would you think if I sold my C300 and bought this...

I know its high miles, but it's fair to say these cars are rock solid reliable, the parts are fairly cheap too. This one also looks to be in good shape. The only wild card is the Targa as far as reliability and value goes, but overall the 993 is predicted to be a future classic.

Just thinking it would be a better car to have my money into for the long term. Also, now that I'm away at school, the C just sits for weeks, so the car isn't driven much, which leads me to yearn for a 6-speed when I return.

Just curious what other c300 owners think of a car like this.
I love Benzes, but I got a thing for Porsches too. BMW and Audi can keep trying

For $30K you should be able to find a Cayman or Boxster that is only 7 to 10 years old, versus 15.
I understand wanting the manual to have fun with but 15 years is a long time and while the drive train may be fine other items are going to go and need attention.
What about buying a Miata for $5K - $10K while you are in school and then rewarding yourself after graduation!

Pretty close to the last of the air cooled engines(1999 models were water cooled I believe)....may help it hold/build value as the years go by.
Nice car, I would'nt fault you one bit as long as you don't need your rear seats!

It's sweet but it's impractical and you will need to have money saved for when it breaks down on you or to do maintenance. I wouldn't but that's just me.

Do it!! I'm looking for a 993 also. Would love to have a targa as a daily, but leaning towards getting a turbo one. Last air cooled Porsche, can't beat that.

Do whatever makes you happy. I'd love a Porsche but not a 15 year old Porsche.

Beautiful car but that's a lot of miles. I would definitely look into the maintance history on the car before signing on that dotted line.

It is a beauty. Take the advice of the others who have posted to save you $$ for repairs. I can speak from experience. Have had 2 Porsches, not cheap to repair. Both left a bad taste in my mouth. I am one to never say never but I will never own another
Porsche. Also, try to find an independent Porsche mechanic who is honest and fair. I live 2 miles from my independent MB mechanic. He is fair, reasonable, and honest. He services my 09 ML350 and my newly acquired 2012 C300 4Matic sport.

Good luck if you take the plunge.

Which two did you own? I hope it wasn't the worst Porsche ever made 944....

Boxsters are for women, 996 are not real Porsche's with those ugly headlights with the eye boggers, cayman are slow, 997 are beautiful but still extremely expensive. So which Porsche would you "love" to own???

I say keep the C Class. It will continue to be a comfortable car to get around when needed. A few years down the line, simply add a toy like the Porsche if you want.

First of all, you need to go and test drive this car because it is not easy to drive - hard clutch, steering wheel is hard to turn, seats are not comfortable... and, as a whole, your Merc would be much comfortable to drive. As to the reliability, I don't know anything about it but, for sure, you will have hard time finding a good mechanic who knows what he is doing.

Sometimes, especially for older cars, that is just part of the character of the car and a big reason why you love it.
The old air cooled engines can sound like they are going to simply explode at higher rpms. Some people are really bothered by this while some people love it.
I personally like old cars as they depend on the drivers skills much more than a computer's. Or, while driving something like a 39 Ford Truck, you just learn to sit back and take it easy enjoying the character (whines, squeaks, rattles and smells of oil and fuel) of and older ride.

Extremely slow and boring. That's why I have a E30 M3 with a euro S50b32. High compression 12.1 to 1. 308 cams etc. for the weekends.

It depends on the point of view - you either love it or hate it
