Install HID Ballast inside headlight??
Hey guys,
I am currently looking at having an HID kit installed in my car. One shop says they prefer to hide the ballast inside the light to prevent any drilling. Have anyone done anything like this?

I did this. With the Morimoto Ballasts from theretrofitsource. Including the error cancelers. There is ALOT of space on the bottom of the headlight, if you take the round dust cover off you can see inside just how much space there is.
I see no adverse effect with this except if the ballasts heated up but i checked and they barely get warm.
I could take a picture if you like, just let me know.
These are the ballasts I used, Morimoto Elite 3Five with Standalone Can bus error canceler harness

They are pretty much secured with pressure considering how packed it is with the error cancelers and cables in there, they don't move around no need to worry about strapping them down.
Here's some pics, it's hard to take pictures inside of the confined space but you get the idea. It makes for a super clean install, i got 5000K HIDs which are the same white as the LED DRLs and its super clean OEM looking.

The bulb's clip is the metal thing around the bulb.
Heat was my main concern at first but i checked the ballast after an hour drive with the lights on and they weren't any hotter then the rest of the headlamp or hot to warrant any kind of concern.
I love morimoto products i have used them over the course of many years in different cars and never had any problems with them. Being able to fit them inside the headlight was just a plus, but I highly recommend these ballasts to anyone looking for high quality ballasts. And they have 5 year warranty.

Morimoto ballasts measures 3.5"x2.5"x.85" and are pretty small ballasts, but you'll want to make sure you have room to fit the canbus harness as well.
We are authorized retailers for Morimoto HID kits and agree those are one of the best kits out there when you look at cost/performance. Right up there with MTEC kits. 3Five units are the current model, but there's a new XB35 with updated ballast that was just released to market (higher grade halide salts, and identified with their unique nylon & tech flex bound high voltage wiring, software update for faster warmup). However, the pricing starts to get up there in MTEC territory.

Also, with the unit jammed in, what you also have to be careful and worry about is stress on the cable if flexed in an awkward angle. And you'll also want to make sure that the unit is fully secure so it won't rattle.

They won't fit. Carlos.33193 has a different model than you. Entirely different headlight housing. This outlines what's probably the cleanest location to mount the ballast: How to install an HID kit on your W204 Mercedes-Benz - YouTube

Oh for sure.. I am just a bit dissapointed lately with this vehicle. The cost for what you get is terrible and Icould have spent 10k less and had a much better car. My honda civic had a nicer and more comfortable interior. I would have chosen a different car looking back. One where I dont need an hid kit for a car that cost this much.

After poking around my car tonight looking inside the lights it is absolutely possible to get ballasts and other wiring inside these lights. In fact you could probably get 2 slim ballasts in there. I am going to do this mod shortly.
Cheers,

I'm surprised you could, but if you can, cheers to you. Remember, it's not just the ballasts, but all the wiring and canbus harness as well that'd need to fit inside there. I'm really looking forward to seeing if you'll be able to fit

Me too. I will be able to try the passenger side without going through the wheel well and that will let me know if it is possible. I will need to package the wiring properly to get it all in. I am going to order from you soon and get on this. I will take a couple pics along the way as if I am successful others will want to see this (and believe it). Cheers bud.

Not sure about your car, but on mine didn't need to go through the wheel well, just put the bulb in by feel and then took a picture with my phone to make sure it was seated and clipped on properly.

Hey, in this case we are talking about a full HID kit install. So might be a little tricky to do this without going through the wheel well. I may try not though.
