Say NO to rusty wheel hubs

I FINALLY got around to be able to do something on my car. It has been going through a tough last couple of months. My girlfriend broke my mirror backing out of the garage, my radio stopped working (fixed this weekend) and one thing that has been bothering me is how nasty my wheel hubs were looking. During the summer in direct sunlight they were BRIGHT orange and they looked disgusting. It completely ruined the look of the car and it didn't help that I had 19" wheels with a lot of open space.

So I took off all 4 wheels today and I scrubbed off the hubs with a wire brush and used brake cleaner to get the rest off. Lots of work, but it was worth it. I put on some rust proof so we'll see how they hold up. If it comes back bad again, I will end up painting them.

I have found cold galvanising spray in SA (Wurth). I have a few slight rust marks appearing through the Zinc coating on my hubs. I'm going to follow Vic's good advice when fitting new tyres shortly.

I painted mine black with caliper paint. I hated the grey then rust color.

Good tip Vic !

I don't have rust on the hub , but I get a little rust on the rotors after heavy rain or car wash. It goes away after I take it out for a drive , but then come back again under the said conditions.

1. Is this rust normal on the rotors ?

2. Is there a rust proof spray that I can use on the rotors ?

Rust on rotors is normal. You can't coat them anywhere a pad touches.

Its no problem painting the wear surface of a rotor, it will scrape off immidiately not affecting brake perfomance.

I prefer not to paint the rotors (too much work because I can only jack up one wheel at a time), but was hoping someone can recommend a rust proof spray for the rotors which i can apply directly.

+1 but then you may as well leave the rotors alone with what Tony is proposing & only spray the hats.

Yes I would love to do something like that. But I will do it when I get new chromed lug nuts. Soma (if not all) ha a little rust and make the stock wheels look old and neglected.

Yes it's normal. It's often called flash rusting and there is a spray that can be put on to stop it but it's only for after a car wash assuming you do it your self. It's called "Hyde's Rust Stopper" and you simply spray it on the rotors immediately after cleaning the wheels. But it wears off once you start driving so it's not meant for drive thru car washes or rain.

Ok cool, exactly what I'm looking for. I work from home so I don't drive it much and I can't stand looking at it for the few days before I drive.
