Synthetic Oil
What is the difference between Mobil 1 5w40 formula m and mobil 1 5w40 esp formula m synthetic oil. I went to my MB dealer and they recommend the me the Mobil 1 5w-40 oil for my 1994 MB C280.

That's right.
The ESP version is a low SAPS product designed to protect modern day diesel engine emissions equipment (DPF). It meets MB 229.51 spec.
If you have a petrol/gasoline engine, you should use the non-ESP version which meets MB 229.5 spec for gasoline engines.
