How to remove double sided tape from a used spoiler?

I'm going to buy a used OEM spoiler and was just wondering how to remove left over from the spoiler. I'm assuming it's a pita to remove it and any excess adhesive ?Should I just take it to the shop?

Heat gun or hair dryer to soften the tape and adhesive up to remove it.

Thanks for the tip. But I'm sure there will be residue from the adhesive left. Any recommendations what solvent use ?

+1 for WD40 with a micro fiber cloth, not as hard on the paint as Goo Gone

Thanks for the tip guys. Then clean it up with alcohol after?

I inquired a shop to get it removed and install the spoiler and they want to charge me $160 - 190 haha. I'm probably better of just buying an aftermarket. But I figure OEM is better.

3M has an automotive type of double side tape. I used it long time ago, something like VHT series?

I tried removing its residue with Goo Gone, which doesn't seem to work at all.

Kero. Its gentle & dissolves most petroleum based adhesives.

finally got the spoiler tonight and got to work on it right away. With the help of a butter knife, rigid round cologne cap, blue painters tape, isopropyl alcohol, and lighter fluid, I was able to remove all the tape and residue.

1. Tape over the painted surface so you dont get it knicked or scratched accidentally and also so just incase you dont get lighter fluid on the painted side.
2. Use the butter knife to scrape of most of the excess foam slowly. You wont be able to get the very thin layer that's going to be stuck on the spoiler still but dont worry about that yet. Just dont scrape so hard you scrape to deep.
3. Use lighter fluid and soak a q-tip and apply enough lighter fluid just to moisten the extra film that is left on the spoiler. Do a quarter section at a time.
4. After about 1 minute of the section soaked,, use any hard plastic thats a bit sharp. I could only find round cologne cap. Scrape off the rest of the left over layer and most of it should come off. You should be able to tell on lighter color spoiler that the layer is coming off as you will be able to see the spoiler color underneath.
5. You will have some adhesive residue left so soak a q-tip again with lighter fluid and rub it on the areas where you can still feel or see residue.
6. Wait about 30 seconds and you can use a plastic dishwasher scrub or you can just use your fingernail to remove the excess adhesive. I did both. Use dry towel to wipe off the soften adhesive.
7. Feel for any left over residue. Areas that are clean will be smooth. Repeat step 6 till the entire suface is smooth.
8. When everything is finally gone, Use isopophyl alcohol and soak a piece of paper towel Terry cloth and remove the excess lighter fluid. Keep repeating till the surface is clean. It should feel like a freshly washed plate.
9. Remove the tape off the painted side and make sure lighter fluid didnt seep through. It shouldn't if you just used q-tip to apply the lighter fluid. If you notice or smeill lighter fluid on any part of the painted surface, clean it off with alcohol.
10. Till you're ready to apply 3m tape, mask off the area you just cleaned with painters tape again so it doesn't get oil from your fingers incase you accidentally touch it. Wrap the spoiler in tower or mask off the painted area so its safe while you store it away.

I assume this is the tape? Going to get 1/2 and 7/8. I'm ready to get this done tomorrow.

Very effective tool for removing any adhesive is sheet eraser

After that use brake cleaner to clean any residues.

So that's the eraser the person that sold me the spoiler was talking about. Does that hook up to a power drill? That would've made things a little easier for me. But glad it's over with. And thanks for the tip on break cleaner.
