Just got through changing my oil, and after starting my 2008 C300 Sport, a steady spurt of oil shot out of the oil filter towards the windshield (about four seconds after ignition). I immediately shut off the car, check to see if my filter was completely sealed, and then restart the car and had the same result. All of this oil is not fun to clean.
I'm using this filter: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...ord=oil+filter
Is this as simple as purchasing an OEM filter or is it something else?

You have installed the o-ring incorrectly. It does not seat up against the lip do the plastic top. Rather, there is a groove a few mm down from the lip. Seat the o-ing in the groove and reinstall. You should be fine.

Sorry to hear that - I recently did my first oil change and tightened the filter housing by hand and didn't have any issues.
Did you replace the 3-4 rings supplied with the new filter?
Also be aware, as it seems that the filter in your link is not made of fleece. Because of that, it does not meet MB's specifications for extended oil changes of 1 year / 19K miles when using a 229.5 approved oil AND the fleece oil filter. For the 7 quarts or so of oil you put in there, I'd recommend going with the filter from your MB dealer instead, as that's expensive oil to be replacing more often than you need to.

Thanks - it was just a bad o-ring placement. Just a few millimeters - thanks a ton, I was about to have it towed in to a shop. Figured it was something simple.
19k for an oil change? I've been doing it every 10,000 and my C300 takes 9.51 quarts of oil according to the owners manual. Is that 19k with a fleece filter typical?

I didn't have the exact oil quantity when I replied - I put in about 7 quarts in my C350 4MATIC and I recall reading at the time that those engines take less oil.
I apologize - being from Canada, I confused miles and km. When I first bought my car, my dealer said oil changes are every year or 19,000 KILOMETERS. This seemed incredibly high at the time, as I was used to 2-3 oil changes a year ever 5-6,000 kilometers. They told me it's because of the filters that MB uses. For that reason, if you are not using the fleece filter with the approved 229.5 engine oil, you shouldn't be getting anything close to 10,000 miles per oil change.
I hope that helps.

Had similar problem on a car and found what happened is the old o ring stayed up on the car and that made the new o ring not seal. Found it myself by looking at the old filter and seeing there was no o ring. How do they say S--t happens. Sorry to hear about your problem and I am glad you found out what was wrong.

I used mann filter - it comes with a few rubber o-rings - two mid size for filter body, one large for filter screw cap - one very small (for oil dip stick - how many of you have changed that one ? My old one was very brittle - probably never changed by the dealer ?) and a 5th one I'm not sure what it is for (oil filler cap maybe ? I don't recall the size now). Make sure you lube all the new rings with a smear of fresh oil ...

Yeah. I'll be using Mann filters from here on out. Thanks for the help, guys. It was just an o-ring issue - and the 2008 c300 Sport takes 8.5 quarts of oil, not 9.5. Don't be like me and end up with blue smoke coming out after about a thousand miles because you overfilled! 😆
