Whats this ticking noise coming from the engine in my C300?
I recently started hearing this ticking noise coming from the engine. Anyone know what it might be? Car is serviced every year by Mercedes, it's the 2011 C300 4Matic. Never had any problems with it, runs great and theres no check engine light. Maybe thats how it always ran but I just never noticed that ticking sound?
I know the evap system purge control valve located close to the washer fluid reservoir makes quite a loud ticking noise when activated, I can't tell if that's what it is by the video though. See if it's coming from that area

On my c250 it was the fuel pump, I just had mine replaced under warranty. The noise sounded like valve train noise coming from the top of the motor.

I just got back from the Mercedes dealer. The advisor told me its probably the fuel pump. It only makes the noise on a cold start up. He told me if it gets louder to come back and they will take care off it.
I know direct injections are louder, but everyone who has seen my car the first thing they ask is what's that noise.
I'll go to the dealer and get their opinion, that car is still under warranty.
Yeah, I just recently picked up my 2012 C350 used, great car and works great , but I immediately asked about the loud (almost diesel like) ticking noise coming from the engine bay (i knew it was the engine or valve train because the sound). The dealer and a independent mechanic both said it was the high pressure pump (fuel), as it is driven off of the passenger side intake cam shaft and due to its placement, makes an audible ticking. It has an insulated covering to mute the noise, but, you can still hear it. They said mine was "louder" than most (didn't affect the performance at all), but, normally they just replace them under warranty as newer ones are bit quieter. Mine was out of warranty, but, I heard other M276 M-B's that were much quieter than mine and it drove me nutz (you couldn't hear inside the cabin with the windows closed or while driving), but, just like you mentioned, people would ask me if my car was diesel. Long story short, I paid out of pocket to replace the HP pump and its like night and day difference. No more ticking.. you do hear a slight mechanical sound with the hood open or you're listening very carefully when right beside the car, but, it definitely doesn't sound like a loud ticking anymore. The part itself wasn't too bad ($550) and 2.3 hours labour, so, it sucked since it wasn't really needed, but, I like my car again now.. LOL
Nice! That is the type of "noise" that is music to my ears... nice "lumpy" LS rumble.....
Thanks, it's a fun car, quite scary to be honest. I am loving my C350 though. It handles so nice, and is very smooth... the only thing I don't like is the loud ticking. It's louder than my Trans Am.
