Exclamation Breaking news: (Another!) Recall: February 2016, Airbag Rupture

I just discovered another open recall

"Driver's frontal airbag inflator may malfunction and rupture." - February 2016
(note this is not the srs-malfunction announced in October 2015).

The recall lists the c300, c350, and c63 as well as nearly every other car in the MB lineup. It states that over 700,000 cars may be affected. In comparison, the recent SRS malfunction lists a potential of 150K cars being affected.

Wtf MB?

This does not look good ...

"CONSEQUENCE:
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death."

Does anyone know if it is possible to start a class-action lawsuit without having been explicitly affected by the several potential malfunctions us C-class owners have faced, considering the frequency and severity?

This is the third, life-threatening, recall in as many years. (1) Air bag metal shard rupture, (2) SRS malfunction, and (3) rear taillight failure.

This is unconscionable and unacceptable.

EDIT: Airbag rupture recall current status: "remedy unavailable"

Factory ordered 2012 MB C350 w/Dynamic Handling Package
Seems like this only affects pre-facelifted W204s.

Is it "possible"? Sure, anyone can pretty much sue about anything. However, I would think your chances of success would be next to zero. Recalls happen all the time for a lot of different reasons. I would think as long as the manufacturer reported it and did something about it as soon as they found out in a timely manner you would have little recourse. Maybe an attorney could chime in on that.

"Unconscionable"? Gee, that seems kind of strong. I can understand your frustration, but unless Mercedes tried to do something underhanded or intentional I don't know that I would think of this situation in that way. Cars are so complex and despite all the testing and research that go into them even manufacturers like Mercedes can get caught up. If this airbag recall is part of that whole Takata mess, then pretty much every car manufacturer is unconscionable.

Thank you for catching this, I have only heard from MB on the tail light recall. I wouldn't exactly call that life threatening though. The airbag issues are clearly dangerous and needs to be fixed ASAP. But suing doesn't solve anything, MB just needs to make it right.

Maybe it is simply my new yorker mentality going straight to law suit. I'm no longer going to drive infants in a vehicle which could potentially have air bags rupture and shoot metal shard through them "into the vehicle, potentially causing injury or death"

Look, every and any car can kill its passengers. But Mercedes touts "The Best or Nothing." I would think it applies to safety standards, and expect them to ensure the integrity of any and all components used in its vehicles. The fact it may impact any, none, or some of 750,000 of their vehicles is pretty ridiculous. One of our w204 forum member's just got hit and his car totaled and no airbags deployed.

Insurance companies insure our vehicles dependent on the saftey ratings they earn. This damages the integrity of said ratings. Taillight, SRS, and air bag failure resulting in metal shards being emitted is a serious indicator of quality control issues in terms of the selection of outsourced components.

Man, I have perfect timing. Having just picked up a 2014 C350 on 5/13 thinking it was clear of the recall. On 5/20, all 2012-2014 C-classes are added.

No worries - we had the same thing happen with the airbags on our 2006 honda CRVs (we have 3 of them between the kids and grand dad). A quick swap at the dealer at no cost. (shrapnel if inflated issue). If you want the perfect car,, maybe a bentley or rolls, but I've come to learn every Model has its foibles within the Mercedes (and in most brands) - and it takes awhile to learn them all before you move on to another model (you're supposed to graduate away from the C class eventually) ; especially if you do some of your own maintenance work. I remember reading on the forum somewhere how the dealer replied to a complaining customer that "it's not an S class." In my travels the only mechanic advice I've gotten was to buy a diesel E class (so you're not spending so much on tires on an AMG model etc etc). You have to remember Mercedes sells more C class than any other model. Its all about demographic positioning. I assisted a friend who had nothing but Fords and an old Honda last summer to buy a c350 calcite white 2010 and its a beautiful car with all the options. So far torn off the drivers mirror and the gas cap door somehow while parking it in the garage and they are finding out how much parts cost from germany painted calcite white ($1700 for a mirror, $1000 for a gas cap door).

Where are you getting this information? Because neither the MB website nor the NHYSA.gov is listing 2012-2014 C-Class as being subject to this recall.

3 months late to offer a correction that the 2012 thru 2014 C-Class models aren't part of the recall?

Especially with a recall that is expected to last until 2019 before most affected airbags are replaced?

That is definitely information people scouring the internet for will appreciate. I'm sure there are many who have visited this that are not registered who would have, and now will, appreciate that information.

I think Adi is just messing around!

My sentiments exactly. Thanks for your input.

Or may be frustrated by the reminder about the recall... Which I can understand. Either way, I've learned not to take offense to anything anyone might say online.

Mercedes shows no open recalls for my 2014 C350, but various sites do have it listed as affected.. notably Car & Driver's continuously updated blog:

Mercedes-Benz (1,044,602, including Daimler): 2005–2014 C-class (excluding C55 AMG but including 2009–2011 C63 AMG)

2012 c63 sedan
I just got my recall letter in the mail few weeks ago for a 2012 c63 amg, front passenger airbag. I wonder if MBUSA can just remove the airbag first? Still need a car to drive. Trying to avoid putting anyone in the passenger seat for now.
