DIY Front Inner Passenger Side CV Boot Replacement

So! As some of you may know, my dealership told me they were unable to change a CV boot due to a lack of know how.

...

Okay, they may not have put it that way, but that's exactly what happened! And they wanted me to pay $1900 for a new shaft plus labour.

So here is my DIY guide to CV shaft boot replacement!

I believe it only applies to 4Matic models.

You will notice that my parts are already clean, I took all the pictures during rebuild, so expect your parts to be much greasier!

THINGS YOU'LL NEED.

-Boot Kit - P/N: A 221 330 02 85
-Hack Saw
-Pliers
-Snap Ring Pliers (Either universal set or one for external clips, angle doesn't matter, although 90deg is easiest.)
-2 or 3 jaw puller
-Rubber Mallet
-Sleeve (or 7/8's socket)
-CV Boot Clamp Pliers

__________________________________________________ _____________

Boot Kit Contents

**NOTE: MARK ALL PARTS RELATIVE POSITION FOR REPLACEMENT***

1 - Separate CV Joint hub housing from shaft by removing CV band. I used pliers, you can also saw (BE CAREFUL), or try to expand where the band was clamped. Inspect Hub for damage.

2 - Remove bearings from CV Joint hub.

3 - Remove Retaining clip

4 - Using a 2 or 3 jaw puller, remove CV joint hub, then remove the boot. (Note, for ease boot can be removed earlier by sawing off, but be careful!)

5 - CLEAN ALL PARTS THOROUGHLY.

6 - Place 2 CV bands and new boot over the shaft. DO NOT CLAMP.

7 - Reinstall CV Joint Hub onto shaft using rubber mallet and suitable sleeve. I did not have a sleeve, so I used a 7/8's socket, worked fine for me, although I would recommend a piece of pipe or equivalent. (See picture from #4)

8 - Install new retaining ring. (See picture from #3)

9 - Grease Bearings with supplied grease and reinstall on CV joint hub. (See picture from #2)

10 - Fill the CV joint hub housing halfway with supplied grease.

11 - Reinstall CV joint hub housing onto CV joint hub.

12 - Fill CV joint hub housing with remainder of grease.

13 - Slide boot over CV joint hub housing and install large CV band using suitable CV boot clamp pliers.

14 - Slide small end of CV band into position over ribs on shaft. Lift end of boot while CV joint is fully compressed in order to creat pressure differential.

15 - Install small CV band using suitable CV boot clamp pliers.

YOU'RE DONE! NO MORE OF THIS!

REINSTALL YOUR SHAFT AND

I am 0 for 3 on people needing my DIY's... hahahaha!
Hoping someone down the road is restoring an old W204 and this saves his dreams... Doubtful but I can still hope!

This may be useful to me, but I hope not Either I need a new front wheel bearing or it's the cv axle making noise.

Ouuff... My dealer said they weren't sure if they could change the boot and might cost me 3g's instead of 90$+3hr labour... Took me all of 45 mins to do it and make the DIY guide...

I hope it's not your CV! If it's making noise it may be too late for it!
I'm sure you can source the CV Joint Hub Housing and three bearings though from a scrap yard!

I sincerely hope it's a bearing though! I could make a guide for that too but I don't want to press out my bearing if I don't have too!

Do you have WIS access? If not I can get you the WIS info!

Very Impressive Josh! I don't have 4-Matic and will probably never need this, but after doing similar repairs on my FWD Volvo I can appreciate the details that went into creating this DIY guide. (Fun with suspension mods here!) <-Fixed

Great Job!!

Aghhhh... My website is censored for some reason... Need to check with Mods on what's happening.

Fixed via different URL for same website. Not sure why one is censored.

Hi,

I have to do this soon with my Outer boot which is torn. Is it difficult to get the shaft off the car's diff/trans? I have all the wrenches for the bolts, but I am not sure if I need anything to pull it out.

Any suggestions how to separate a rear outboard CV on a 4matic? The CV boot kit comes with a "c" clip. So do I just pull?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I have 2013 C300 4Matic with inner boots torn on both sides.
What is the fastest way to remove front cv axles from the vehicle?
It looks to me that I need to unbolt the front shock bolts and maybe the steering rod end, does it sound about right?
Or is there easier way?

Also, when I unbolt the shock from the steering knuckle, do I have to do alignment after all is done? Not sure if there is adjustment in these cars.

I did my inside passenger boot like 6 months ago and video taped it but the SD cars would not read when I tried uploading it.

You need to do these things if I remember correctly.
1) remove axle bolt( very f-ing tight)
2) Disconnect wheel speed sensor and brake pad sensor
3) knock loose axle shaft spline from knuckle so it can slide out
4) take off brake line bracket on shock absorber and disconnect brake line from bracket on the body( don’t need to disconnect line or hose
5) Disconnect bottom 2 strut bolts to knuckle
6)take off undershield and slide a pry bar btwn the engine/subframe and carefully pry loose axle from differential
7) pull out axle
8) mount axle in a vise to secure it
9) brake off boot straps, cut off boot
10) carefully slide off the spline hat( there are 3 bearings that link the hat to the shaft, be sure not to let them fall)
11) clean everything best you can
12) remove cir-clip that locks the collar into place
13) use a 3 arm puller to carefully remove the collar
14) clean the shaft really well
15) slide the small band clamp onto the shaft
16) put on the boot
17) find a deep socket that the shaft can just barely slide into
18) the collar is tapered on one end, that end faces the shaft
19) take the socket and carefully hammer the collar back onto the shaft, then install the new cir-clip
20) position the boot into place (Groove) and tighten the small band clamp( make sure it’s positioned straight on the boot), I used breaker bars as extensions for the tool to be sure it was real tight
21) put about 1/2 the grease into the boot
22) disperse the rest into the spline hat
23) install bearings
24) install the hat
25) pop the boot onto the hat in the groove, tighten the large band clamp onto the boot
26) reinstall the axle and make sure it is all the way in
27) put everything back together in reverse
27b) when tightening the axle boot, be sure it is properly splined to the hub, otherwise you will have a very expensive repair in the near future, tighten the cr*p out of the axle bolt(literally), use a pipe for more leverage.

Use your judgement, I could be missing something.

No alignment is needed.

@Just204 : How the heck did you get a pry bar in there to remove the passenger side axle? I don't see any room to do that in my 2013 C300 4matic sport. Also, while installing the axle back on the car, did you find it difficult to insert the outer axle shaft into the wheel hub, to the point of having to use an install kit?

very very hard to get the right angle if not on a lift. Use a good light and use a thin pry bay, the area is tight, you get to it sliding the pry bar between the subframe and the outside surface of the differential and you can just get it to hook behind the axle hat. Pry against the end of the hat and it will pop out.you don’t need an install kit to get the outer spline through the hub. Grab the strut to hub bolts and have them close to you. Before you start bolting anything up line up the axle splines with the hub, while they are lined up take one hand and grab the top of the hub and slam it in towards the car hard, again make sure splines are lined up. When you do that you will it knock the hub into the axle and it will slowly work the axle into the hub each time you slam the top of the hub inwards. Eventually it will get to the point you can get the axle bolt threaded in some. Keep the hub pressed in and grab the bottom strut bolts and slide them through the strut/hub to get the hub mounted into place. Make sure the inner axle hat is fully into the diff before you do this!

I never did it so not sure how tight it is pressed on. I dont have a jaw puller so would try and rig something with the tools i have. I've also seen pullers cheap on Amazon, may be worth getting just to have in case, return it if you dont end up using it.
