Brakes - Rotors

Sorry for another thread on this subject, but this wasn't directly related to brake pads which I see some other threads are about.

I will be needing a brake pad replacement shortly (first time). The rotors have a bit of a lip to them, but what do you guys do?

New brakes and new rotors at the same time? Or do you do two sets of brakes and then the rotors go.

What's your preference? There isn't obvious scoring on my rotors either, just a bit of a lip. Thoughts?

I am hard on brakes and rotors though. I drive very aggressively although now at 47000km and it'll probably last another 6 months..

Get them resurfaced. You don't want uneven wear on your new pads.

Great question.

I have a 2012 W204 C300 sport. Just typing while in bed so going off of memory.

(front and rear are OEM)

Front is drilled I believe.
Rear is neither

Both are vented, right?

Thanks for your help in advance.

On rotors that are either drilled or slotted you can't resurface them, only blanks. You can on the rear but most of the time there's no point unless you get a brake pedal pulse. Having a little lip on the edge is normal, don't worry about it. If you don't get a vibration in the steering wheel when you brake they are not likely warped. Go to harbor freight and buy a digital vainer caliper and measure the rotor thickness. Min thickness is stamped on OEM rotor hats, hard to see so clean with a wire brush. If they are close replace them, if they are warped thickness will change over various spots. Measure around where the middle of the pad goes on the rotor to be accurate and rotate the rotor to measure different spots, minor variation will happen due the human factor. This is BMW practice for replacement of rotors on the maintance plan.

Thanks, sir. What do most of you do for the front rotors? If you can't resurface - perhaps just put on new pads and call it a day or do you replace rotors at the same time? (e.g. for those of you who have measured the thickness are you "ok" for another set of pads and call it a day?)

Just wanting to see what others do for their brakes. Thank you

No problem! If the rotors are not warped or worn down close to the min just put pads on n your done. A set of rotors should be good for 2 sets of pads OEM. If they are warped or close to min thickness replace them. It's better this way without being technical.

Rotors will also have the max or original thickness on them on the hat. You can use that as a guide on how worn they are 😉

Yep, as stated above, all rotors have a minimum wear thickness on them (that is usually stamped on the rotor). Once they get below this thickness they need to be replaced. If you are going to measure the thickness of the rotors make sure to measure in several places, as the rotor can wear unevenly.

We have more info and if in this tech article and you decide to replace them yourself it should help: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...eplacement.htm

If you do need rotors we have some great options here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg3.htm#item8. Let me know if you have any questions on different brands other than Genuine MB.

Thanks for your input. We are aware of shipping costs for our Canadian customers and may look to help improve this in the future.

Canada gets the shaft a lot on shipping so I am used to it and rotors are heavy but $100 has to be an error.

If you don't mind could you shoot me a PM with the rotors you're looking to purchase and your shipping address. I'd be more than happy to look into this for you.

Since you're in Canada I'd reach out to http://exoparts.com/

Tell them you saw this on mbworld and they'll give you an additional discount. Shipping is $15 I believe (not sure if that's applicable to SK, but that's the flat rate for Ontario). HTH fellow Canuck!
