Is Pentosin ATF1 good for my w204?
Dear Mbworld members,
I drive a 2008 Mercedes C300 4matic sport and I just reached 108,000 miles. I'm planning to flush the transmission fluid next week and needed help. I have ordered 10 quarts of Pentosin ATF 1 LV Automatic Transmission Fluid (5 Liter) - Pentosin 1088206 . My question is it good for my car or should I return it and get something else. If I used this transmission oil I will be putting at least 60,000-80,000 miles on it.
Any help will be appreciated.
kind regards,

In general your Pentosin is OK..some sites say that if it doesn't say "MB -approved 236.14" versus "MB 236.14" they are upset ! See link....https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...236.14_en.html
https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...236.14_en.html
Pretty sure one MB site wants you to change your tranny fluid ideally every 39K miles, don't recall if there is a time limit. However the Schedule B Service for your C300 has you changing the trans fluid every 2 years/20,000 miles.
When was the last time the fluid was changed on your 108K mile car ?
Anyway, I would use the Pentosin you got..may need 11 qts total or more because of loss during the fill. If you are doing the job yourself Pelican Parts has a good DIY with photos..FCP Euro has one too. Ideally you'll need a fill adaptor, infrared temp gun (Harbor Freight), and the trans fluid flush kit (gasket, tube insert, sometimes the bolts are included plus filter/O ring).
One messy job if you used ramps like me. I now give the job to an Indy MB shop, remind them the torque convertor needs to be drained too, and bite the financial bullet
Hope this helps

Hi gamma300C
Thank you for all your information and help, I only have one questions, why I will need an infrared temp gun for ? I will be doing this job myself with a Subaru technician supervision and we watched couple videos we probably missed the temp gun part. Do we really need that ?
#4
The fluid should be at 40C when you set the level. As long as you're fairly close, it's fine. The infrared gun reads a bit off from what the internal temp sensor say anyway, which is what you are supposed to use for the temp reading.

"Transmission oil temperature
using STAR DIAGNOSIS 45 °C/113 °F.
The transmission oil temperature must not
exceed the specified value as the overflow
pipe (1) in the transmission oil pan is
designed for the transmission oil
temperature"
The fluid temp dictates the correct fill level per MB's procedure. Some owners have a scan tool which will give the trans oil temp, others use the trans oil pan temp as an approximate number, close enough probably.
See my attached link for pretty much everything the MB Service manual has to say in the attached pdf.s (post #1).
You'll aslo notice the change interval is 36K miles for the ROW cars.

That gets you into the "MB ( tested by) approved" vs "MB "should be OK but not officially tested by MB" argument.

Transmission is a major and expensive part of the car and you shouldn't risk it in order to save $30-$50 per 60,000km. This should be out of the question.

Here's the MB "approved"/tested ATF fluids for a 2008 C300...all except the Valvoline product are European finds only, except the Pentosin/MB product..sure you can find some on the after market sites. Can't say I have ever seen the Valvoline product for sale.
Porsche has a similar policy with Euro products only or Porsche approved OEM fluid.
This debate is well presented on all the MB Forums...one side says only use MB tested/approved fluid while the other side uses the " I've used MB Spec fluids for years, in race cars, etc. w/o a failure".
Pick your side...in general I have never seen much in the way of threads talking about 7G tranny failures and pretty sure a lot of people use fluids from the MB Spec list.
One discussion (true ?) mentioned that a trans fluid supplier may present their product to MB to test at their exspense so a business decision may be involved as to whether ta MB Spec becomes a MB approved product. Or the Manufacturer may already know their product won't pass.
The discussion will go on.......if you think MB knows best you will use their listed products. If you have your doubts because your ESL failed after 30K miles , you might opt in another direction.

I have decided to take the risk and use Pentosin since I have already ordered it, I only got it out of ignorance. FCP Euro has a transmission service kit and I just got the whole kit. I just asked one of our Subaru technicians and he said I can use any ATF even a Subaru ATF will work with Mercedes.

dude, do not mix fluids. esp ones that are not explicitly approved. do you really want to take a gamble with a $5000 transmission that is already known to grenade very easily?
in any event, here are some helpful links as it looks like you didnt bother searching.

And while he does say "Please only use Benz approved fluids", it should be clear that he means "Please only use fluids that are approved by Benz for your model". Otherwise, what would be the point of Benz doing all that research to determine which fluids work best for which transmissions.
I'll also leave this here:
Ultimately, it is your car and your decision on what to do with it...

Because here is the 2008 C-Class Maintenance Schedule, and not only is there no requirement for a transmission oil change at 2 years or 20,000 miles... There is no service requirements at 20,000 miles at all. It goes 13,000, 26,000, 39,000.... So every 13,000 miles!

Pentosin ATF1LV had MB Approval and was on BEVO, CRP changed the fluid packaging very recently and the fluid is now called ATF 134, it also has MB Approval.

My apologies...ATF every 39K miles or 60K Km. Must have been thinking brake fluid flush.
With regards to the underlined sentence, where do you get that from?

Does this mean it longer is on BEVO and accordingly no longer has MB Approval? And considering it is still available, why would MB remove the Pentosin ATF-1 LV from its list if it were "approved"?
Here is what I am able to find... This document by CRP states that:
"Pentosin ATF 1 LV Fully Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid and is recommended for Mercedes-Benz 236.10, 236.12, and 236.14 specifications"
It does not say "MB Approval" or "Approved by MB"... It says it s "recommended", and we both know "recommended for" and "approved by" are not in the same realm. In fact, I believe that this is what gamma300C was alluding to although he used "MB ( tested by) approved" vs "MB "should be OK but not officially tested by MB" argument).
Either way, when checking the MB BEVO list for all 3 specs listed by Pentosin in its press release, the Pentosin ATF 1 LV is not listed on any of them. NONE!
Here is Spec 236.10
Here is Spec 236.12
And here is Spec 236.14 (which obviously lists the "Petosin ATF 134" which aside from what you have posted here, I haven't been able to find any sort of connection between it and the "Pentosin ATF1-LV".
Also and while I am no oil industry expert, but I even looked for a spec sheet for both, and while I can find one for Pentosin ATF-1-LV, I came across nothing for the Pentosin ATF-134.

I just received my Pentosin ATF 1LV from FCPEuro because they packaged this oil with the trans kit for my 1997 W140 - 722.6 . I only purchased this out of convenience, not price. Is using ATF 1LV really an issue & and why is FCPEuro selling Pentosin together with the service kit if it is?

I cant find any mercedes link that backs this up - maybe you can share that info
There is some mention in a few old Pentosin press releases but the current spec does not http://www.pentosin.net/specsheets/Pentosin_ATF1LV.pdf
and approved 134 has different specs to 1LV
