Plug everything back in that you disconnected. You must have disconnected both adjustment motors otherwise you wouldn't be at the step you are at. Use the adjustment stalk on the side of the steering wheel to then retract the column. The same way you would do it when the car is fully assembled. There really is no easy way to do it manually.
I have it tore all apart will it still work if steering wheel is off but plugged in and battery back on? Plug the head without steering? And hook battery back up to retract it? It being esl problem windows or nothing worked would this work since it's not moving anything else? I appreciate you

Its only done 47,000 kms. I love this car but its utter garbage..no faith in it when its been towed so many times since new. Mercedes should come clean and replace these defective units at no cost.
So be warned that the replacement part as @ 2016 was still crap!
In addition I am about to replace the front shock absorbers and struts for the second time since new. I am a careful driver so its not due to mistreatment.
Oh and my headlight switch is defective and caused battery failure. The lights come on when the car is unattended. Its necessary to leave the switch in the auto position to avoid this.
My light switch is stuffed too and intermittently the RH parking lights come on in the dark garage. Switch is about $4-$500 and there is no after-market one available.Thanks for tip with AUTO position, will try. Crap car!
Remove the gas pedal and brake pedal. I had the same problem with room. Once I removed both pedals the column came out without any struggle. Plug everything back in and use the position adjuster to retract the column completely before trying to remove it.

With my vehicle (C220 CDI W204) it certainly is possible to take the column out (pull) with the ESL still bolted on as I had to do. I made the mistake then to use a hacksaw rto cut the attachment bolt to the ESL ather than an angle ginder with a very small circular blade or Dremel.
Esl is a very common failure. EZS fails very seldom. No whirring noise and you can be pretty sure its the ESL! and btw the key will ALWAYS turn in a w
204 even if you disconnect the battery or even use another key from another car. Key turning on a w204 means nothing in way of diagnosis!

The ignition should only be able to be unlocked and turned by an authorized key. The key receives power from the ignition lock from an induction coil, it does not run off the battery in the key. The car will start even if the battery in the key is dead. i dont see how the key can be turned if the cars battery is disconnected but im not an expert.
When ESL is on its way out, I guess it needs more power to unlock (battery must have enough charge) and the sound is weakening. Install an emulator as my recommendation.
