Belt and tensioner replacement. Does anyone replace the shock?
I am going to replace the accessory belt, tensioner and pulleys ect and want to know if anyone replaced the shock also?
That is $89 I'd like to save if I don't have to spend. Is this a part that fails frequently or have most of you never replaced this when doing the pulleys? Is there a way to tell if the shock is cooked other than removing it for inspection? The parts guy at the dealership seems to think I would not need it and he has not ordered a whole lot of those, if any.
I am thinking I don't need to order it.

what year and what engine are you talking about? If you are talking about your 2008 c230, does that have the m271 engine? If so, I have never replaced the tensioner on one of those engines unless I had it out and the components were off. The usual failure is the alternator pulley with the 1-way slipping clutch.

okay, if it has the m272 v6 then there shouldn't be a shock attached to your tensioner. It should just be the normal m272 belt tensioner on the front of the engine.

Thanks. My car has the M272 motor but it is in storage right now so I can't check, but I never did recall seeing a shock in there anywhere. I gave the parts guy my VIN# and the list of parts I need had that shock on there.

Can't say I've ever come across an M272 engine with a shock on the tensioner. Just do the rest minus that shock and you should be just fine.

My heat gauge started varying a bit. I decided to replace the belt, but then replaced all 3 pulleys as well. On inspection the small pulley bearing was dry, and just caught in time, may made a very slight noise which could only be heard when spinned next to your ear. The other two pulley bearings were solid and good condition by design. I dont know about the tentioners tention. The belt seemed ok enough. My alternator pulley was ok.
After this the heat gauge stabilised again (This was a surprise).
The shock-?
Look at this thread, there are a photo of a shock.........but not on this car-?

My thoughts also at first but not having my car available for me to look at made me second guess everything. Thanks for the help.

I checked with my parts guy and they ran my VIN again and say that shock is on there, M272 engine and all.
I'll hold off till afer x-mas on ordering the parts. I am able to go check on the car then and confirm once and for all there is or is not a shock. I a still thinking no. I guess it is a water pump to belt tensioner shock

What do you mean by a shock...? I looked again with a tourch, cannot see a shock.
1-Does it look like a shock, like we know how a shock looks, like on some older other models-?
https://mbworld.org/forums/mercedes-...l#&gid=1&pid=1
2-Do you mean the shock-Function build into the crankshaft pulley-?
3-The only part moving as a part when my engine is running, is the belt tentioner pulley, so if theres a shock, it must be build into that assembly, the other pulleys are all fixed(Excluding the crankshaft pulley for this argument)

Like I said, I don't think I've ever seen an M272 belt tensioner with a shock/damper attached. Just get the tensioner and idler pulleys and you'll be just fine.

I am still curious as to why it is on the parts diagram and if anyone has it on their car. I really don't recall ever seeing one on mine.

Who makes the large tensioner? I bought, what I was told to me as being a genuine part but it is made in Turkey and did not come in any Mercedes packaging. I figured it would be made by Mahle or something, not made in Turkey packaged in a brown box. One of the pulleys was made in France (#5 on diagram) and the smallest one Germany. At least I was sent a Continental belt.
Tensioner is Part# 5 in the drawing a few posts above. 272-200-02-70

Every YouTube I've seen does NOT have is "damper" And help would be Awesome

Sorry for bringing back an old thread but Anyone have any idea on this? The shock I have on mine (08 c300 sport manual) is rattling. Any idea why some engines have it and some don’t. Maybe removed after first year of production of the w204? Most pics or videos I’ve seen do not have it.
