Hello,

Wife had some problems with her car and after reading the forum, want to make sure I'm straight.

This afternoon, she heard a "weird" sound that she could not describe or remember...

When getting close to home, the red battery light came on and she lost power steering.

I looked under the hood and the serpentine belt was shredded. Got a new one but there are 2 pulleys that I can't spin (#1, #6 on all the diagrams I've seen) - The (big) vibration damper (crankshaft?) pulley closer to the middle, and the smooth idler pulley (i think this is correct) - it just says "pulley" on the diagram, but it's the small one up top.

Do I also need to replace the tensioner pulley?

Is it common for (2) pulleys to seize up at the same time, and what was likely the cause?

Thanks y'all!

Glad she’s okay, power steering was lost? Nightmare!!!

Replace the tensioner and the rollers all in one shot along with the belt. You don't have to touch the large crank pulley. Just the small plastic ones and the tensioner.

Thanks! Does the crank pulley not turn when the car is off?

No, the crank pulley does not turn when the car is off. It is fastened tight to the crank shaft, which is what drives the belt.

And you don't necessarily need to replace all the idler pulleys. If they are smooth and quiet, you could let some go for now. Partly depends how many miles you have on the car. If it has 100k, I'd probably do them all just for peace of mind, but at 50k I would only do it if they are noisy or rough.

here are some easy DIY instructions for you. I'd replace both the guide pulleys even if they seem ok. I'd do it all in one shot but that is just me. Only 2 guide pulleys and a tensioner to replace.

I replaced belt and the 2x idler pulleyes plus the tentioner unit with pulley & belt.

Note:My pulleys felt ok, but on investigation, I found the small idler pulley making a noise I could only hear when spinning next to my ear. I opended it, and it was bone dry, ready to seize soon. It had about the same minor play as the new one. The other pulleys had zero play and spinned normally, I never the less replaced all 3.

When the tensioner goes bad on these cars it takes the belt with it and shreds it, always keep an eye on the tensionner and the belt for signs or shredding.
