225 45 18 tires on (W204) fronts

Does anyone have experience with using (225 45 18) this size tire on the 2012 C300 4matic sport? The current tire 225 40 18 are really bad for NYC roads would like to add some extra rubber between the road and rim. Thanks and safe driving!

I tried 18" 225/45 Blizzaks on the my 09 C300 4Matic and they rubbed...particularly on turning/bumps.

That sucks. What if I went to 215 45 18 would that work?

You might wanna try going with 235/40 18. It’ll give you around 1/4” more meat/height profile, and it may be enough cushion. If you go that route, you might also need to go 265/35 18, for the rears to keep the diameters close for the 4matic. I did it back when I still had my w204. Surprisingly, it actually drove better, no rubbing either. But, I am in CA and I don’t know if that would be enough profile for your NY roads.

Good luck!

Can't say for sure but the 215's are about a 1/2" less tall so they have a better change of clearing.

The 40 profiles in the 18" rim will clear...been there. I have bent rims with 40 (235/40-18) profiles in really deep potholes but at speeds above 30-35 mph.

YIKES! So, if 225/45’s rub, and 235/40 clears but still bend rims, what size ended up working for you?

Are the roads over there really that bad now? Last time i drove in NY was waaaay back in the early 90’s and I usually just took the subway. If that’s the case, it might be time to search for an SUV instead of a tire...

Thanks for all the comments.
I want to stay with my current 18" rims just want some extra rubber between me and the road. The stock setup every 2" hole sounds like the suspension is bottoming out.

I stayed with the 235/40-18's, replaced the one front bent rim and avoid potholes !!

I remember after I switched to 235/40’s, i was thinking it looked like I could still have gone 245/40 18. The space was there, but I didn’t need the extra height profile.

you both might need to go that size then...

With a 4matic, for as long as your tire diameters are within 3% f/r, you should be ok.
