Grinding Noise!
The noise is only apparent within the first 60 seconds of driving and I can feel a vibration in the steering wheel and underneath my feet. The car isn't shaking and it's not a super loud grind but it is definitely noticeable from the drivers seat that something isn't right.
After about 15-20 seconds of the grinding which feels to be in sync with the turning of the wheels, it stops and disappears. The grinding is only present when driving under 15 KM/H and without the brakes being pressed. Even if I stop and start the car the sound does not reappear, until its been sitting for awhile.. (sometimes it doesn't come back until the next day)
The other day as I was leaving an underground parking lot after being parked for about 1 hour. While driving up the ramps to the high levels to exit the grinding sound was present, upon reaching the exit and going onto the street the noise was gone.
The grind started out happening once a few months back once in a parking lot but disappeared after 15 seconds. I ruled this to be the parking lot and not the car as it didn't come back. (I cannot remember the season this happened).
A few weeks ago, I had a alignment performed as well as brand new Conti DWS06 tires installed. Everything was great until the past 14 days. Since then the grind has now appeared more frequently from 2-3 times per week to now 3-5 times per week. I have confirmed tire pressure to MB spec. The brakes are in fair condition with Zimmerman rotors and CarQuest Wearever Platinum Pads. There is still a few months left in these.
The grind sound appears if the car is left for 12 hours or even 1 hour -- BUT does not appear every time. We are starting to get colder weather in Toronto, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it.
When I was parked in the green P underground parking lot, it seemed somewhat heated and not " freezing cold" and it still made the grinding noise up the ramps.
I had the mechanic who performed the alignment test drive first thing in the morning after being parked all night and they were able to hear the noise. They lifted it up and everything looked fine. When they put it back down the sound was gone and they could not reproduce it.
Any Ideas?

ADAPTIVE BRAKE also improves safety in wet conditions: in the wet, the technology applies regular, brief braking impulses to wipe the film of water from the brake discs and ensure that the brakes are able to perform at their peak. The automatic brake drying function is always activated when the windscreen wipers of the E-Class have been operating for a certain time. The driver does not notice the finely metered braking impulses.
the post was old so I was wondering if it made it to the C-Class yet
the pads were fine, no irregular wear on them
or the rotors. Nothing out of the ordinary... cleaned out everything and grinding has seeemed to disappear for
now...
hands in the air no idea what it could have been.... or if it’s truely resolved.
Guess time will tell...
I disconnected the sway bar links to test and the creaking noise Was still present.
I found a user reporting similar grinding sounds on another forum for a different car relating to a bad strut mount / bearing. I’m starting to think that is all related to the front struts or strut mount.
I just had my rear struts replaced as they had failed. I find it hard to believe the fronts have gone at the same time but there is no explanation and the suspension creaking is coming directly under the hood where the struts mount.

However I did notice this same issue later on in my car as similar to why you describe. From what I had read it has to do with oil pressure being lost in the piston or something. Rip the engine apart and change parts and some still reported it continued. MB says it’s “normal”
I had the same issue it would be fine all day but in the morning after starting it the first time after it sat for a few hours it would rumble and sound crazy for about 20-30 seconds. I fixed this by trading it in.
goodluck
