2011 C250 blue efficiency sport 2.1 diesel, possibly OM651 engine
Yesterday the car decided that when it gets hot to develop some kind of knocking noise. Plugged it in and seem to be getting cam position sensor fault.
my first instinct is to change the sensor and hope for the best. I’ve tried to do some research hoping that others may have encountered something similar before but doesn’t seem to be much around online and if there is it’s a different engine.
hoping that someone may have experienced something similar and can advise if I’m going down the correct route with the sensor or if I need to look elsewhere.

The position sensor of the intake camshaft (cylinder bank 1) has a sporadic malfunction. There Is A General Failure.

Put your VIN in at www.lastvin.com to verify your engine type.
If it only happens when the engine gets hot (what does that mean? normal operating temperature?), then there may be some thermal expansion of plastic or metal, and replacing the sensor may be the right thing to do.
what I meant by when it’s hot is that the noise is pretty much non-existent when the engine is cold. But when it gets to normal operating temperatures then it makes the knocking noises.
Thank you for your advice, I will take a look and see if those videos will guide me in the right direction.

Again, when at normal operating temperature compared to a "cold" engine, you have thermal expansion, which may be enough to affect the sensor.
Is the DTC current and/or stored (historic)? How soon does the DTC come back after you clear it? Have you looked at the Freeze Frame data to see when the DTC occurs? What scanner are you using?
If it were me I would pull the sensor and inspect it and the wiring/plug. clean everything and put it back. Clear the code and see if it comes back, or the same noise continues. I haven't dealt with this specific issue, but my research leads me to want to clean and inspect everything first before spending money for a new sensor.
Also check the oil level and check the battery voltage/charge just for fun.
I have no idea about the OM651 engine or diesels in general. The diagram I found does appear to show that sensor you circled over the intake camshaft though, so i would say yes.
Here is a link to the Mercedes OM6510 service manual i just came across. Not alof of info but has some.
Was going to say if you can locate another cam sensor you might try swapping them, then see if the codes/positions change. At least rule out the sensor. From my limited research on this issue im finding most say it is circuit related, and people who replace the sensor end up with the same issue/code.
Thank you for taking a look into this for me and confirming, I took the sensor out and cleaned it up and seems to be running a lot better, I’ve order a replacement for peace of mind also.
i did plug in the code reader with the sensor disconnected and chucked up loads more intake can sensor faults along with the original, so I would say it is the correct one also. And fingers crossed changing the sensor will fix it completely, if not I’ll have to look at the loom.
