Sometimes i'll go in the trunk and notice some gloves and towels i keep in the little cubby on the left feel damp. I has been raining the past day or two and when i reached in last night a towel was soaked. I did some looking around though it was dark and couldn't see much but I did manage to find what looks like an opening in the trim.
I park my car backed in on a slight hill so the rear is higher than the front. I think this is the reason for the leak, if i parked on flat ground the water would simply drain away.
Heres some photos. i looked at photos of other cars and seems this is normal for how the trim fits.
Red arrow shows a pin where water is seen coming out on the underside. Blue arrow shows the opening im talking about.
Im seeing water and debris coming out from around the pin. Also looks wet all around the areas marked in red.
Used a pipe cleaner to feel around back there. Pulled out alot of dirt and debris that was behind there.
I looked up the parts diagram. Wanted to see how the trim fits. Trim is # 90.
Heres the trim piece.
Heres what that pin looks like:
Guess my next step is removing that trim piece and see whats underneath. Seems like an odd design. Last night I poured some water at that area and sure enough it disappeared behind that opening. I had a hand full of towels held up to the underside of that area and they got soaked.
Started to remove the pins but noticed they were disintegrating, the round washer-type section was just falling apart. I think they might even be rubber type sleeves that are meant to seal the holes, but theres nothing left they fell apart? Plus its raining pretty hard and water was going down the open holes so stopped for now.
Im thinking at least ill remove the trim and clean everything up then throw some sealant in the holes when I put the pins back. Ill look for replacement pins while I'm at it.
That was easy. Quick search of the part numbers and it does look like its two pieces. A rubber bottom that fits in the hole first then the plastic part that fits down in and must expand the rubber to seal the holes. Found them inexpensive on ebay.
The Mercedes brand pins are over $3 a piece so went with aftermarket. Need 10 pins to replace both sides. I got 20 in case they are used somewhere else. I went with this listing because they are one state away so figured id receive them quick.
I never saw these type of pins before or knew they existed. They do make sense if trying to seal a hole. Least expensive Genuine Mercedes brand pins I found is on eEuroparts, least expensive aftermarket was Alieexpress. Seeing that much water getting in my trunk has me paranoid something may happen so I want to try and fix it asap.
its hard to tell just how wet the carpet is because its not exactly cloth and I cant tell just by touching it but a bunch of paper towels I left in the trunk yesterday are now soaked. I lifted the floor tray up and sure enough there's pooling water on the bottom and in the plastic cover on the spare tire. I have a set of jumper cables I have coiled up in a cloth bag placed right above the spare tire that works great at keeping the floor from caving in when I put stuff in the trunk and just looked and they are all corroded from moisture. Brought them inside to clean up and they completely wet. I just mopped all the water up with a towel because there's some type of electrical component under there for the tpms i don't want ruined.
I did notice at the bottom of the trim there is an opening for water to drain so I dont think waters getting trapped behind the trim. Just in my case the rubber meant to seal the holes has deteriorated plus parking with the rear end higher leads to water getting in.
I did notice there is what looks like a plug of some sort is not there, can see down to the ground. I cant imagine this being left open on purpose. Im going to have to track down the part# for it on my diagrams. Im seeing water on the right side at the battery tray also so ills leaking on that side too.
Looking around online it seems this issue with the leaky pins has already been documented, its good to see im not the only one and hopefully new pins should solve the issue.
Looks like that is the grommet at that hole, meant to be open for some reason. Part 330.
Why, yes it does. And that makes sense. I wish they would use them in the floorboard, as well. The floorboard is where wiring and electronics run, yet they use solid plugs when something like these would keep water from pooling. I guess I could always take the ones I removed and drill nice holes in the middle.
I was under the car earlier and happen to notice that grommet. Guess its designed so water wont splash up. I never noticed that its just the spare tire tub showing on the underside, no other paneling installed.
Finally received the new pins. My plan of paying a little more because the seller was listed as being closer so I would receive them quickly didn't work out that well.
I noticed the bottom piece feels like rubber on the originals, these new ones feel more of like a plastic but they are still soft-ish. The press in pieces seem almost identical to the originals except a few has some extra plastic that needs to be trimmed away before using.
Im thinking these pins fail by the trim cutting into them over time. The sleeves I was able to pull out had indents all around them and some were cut open.
Had alot of rain yesterday into today and when I checked the trunk it seemed dry so far. Install was pretty easy, flat head screw driver to pry up the heads of the old pins enough to grab them with a pair of pliers and yank them out. The new sleeves fit in the holes nicely, had to bang some of the insert pieces down with the end of my screw driver they were so tight.
Sealant would be a good idea though it would probably work best if installed underneath the plastic trim. I dont really see the point of the plastic trim other than cosmetic. Its clearly designed for water to travel underneath it and drain at the bottom.
It was cold and wet when I received the pins and just wanted to put them in right away. When the weather gets nicer I plan on removing the trim to clean everything underneath. Looks filthy under it, I was pulling alot of dirt out when i was poking around with some pipe cleaners. probably a good idea to apply some Turtle Wax Seal N Shine i like using on the paint so the water beads off easier. Im thinking the built up dirt under there just absorbs and holds water.
I also just received some screws for the undertray. Lately ive been hearing some type of banging on the front drivers side when going over bumps, I thought it may be the sway bar link worn again. Turns out a screw is missing in the under tray. Without the screw this section really flops around.
- Sheet metal screw 4.8X19 Part# 0019906036 Uses 8mm socket to install.
- Clip Part# 0049943145
Its the screw marked with the yellow circle.
Part 150 and 160.
I ordered aftermarket. I have read that these black painted screws may rust over time but they were much cheaper than the Mercedes screws. I think the Mercedes screws are around $3 each.
We just had a huge rain storm for the past two days and its all dry in the trunk even in the spare tire compartment. Seems the old pins were the cause of the leaks.
I have a C250 2014 and behind the drive break light there’s a sub I believe it’s where the first aid kit is I have a leak I just went and got MB replacement plugs at the dealership and is hoping that will fix it I noticed a vent there also if the plugs don’t work it has to be the vent what is it for and any ideas?
Parts diagram shows it as a breather. I'm guessing it could be to vent gas out from batteries that are mounted in the trunk, or maybe to let pressure out when you close the trunk lid, or just to let pressure out in general from using the hvac?
Inspect it. i believe it should work to let air out, not in.

im still getting water in after replacing plugs if that vent is just a breather maybe the drain house I pulled it out and washed the bend that drains to the outside what is that hose for do you have a diagram of that as well?
How are you testing it for water getting in the trunk? Just from a rain storm, or washing the car? I was recently washing my car then went in the trunk and a few drops of water dripped down from the trunk lid, looking closely it seems the trunk lid sits a little bit higher on the right side, may not be compressed against the gasket trim completely resulting in water being blown in from washing the car. i dont see a way to fix or adjust how the trunk closes though, may just be from age and wear the trunk lid is not fully aligned.

where 710 is where my leak is pooling up in that part behind the fabric I took that connected off 710 cleaned it and put it back in I’ve cleaned the breather I live in Oregon it’s rain season and I check and dry it out every morning the house is connected good to 710 I put it in I did notice 710s hole is like a slit not a round opening not sure if that could be it? I might have to take the trim off the electronic box there I think the sub is getting wet and the stereo is going in and out and sometime screeches now I’m stumped I poured a cup of water where the hose drains and it runs out the bottom bumper to the ground I can post some pictures when I get off work

are you able to take a picture of the part 710 how’s the end look that the water drains out of mine is a slit and I don’t think it’s able to get out and does your back window have a seal on the sides mine doesn’t
There is no seal around the rear window, just two thin ones at the top on each side. The edge of the glass is visible.
There are two part numbers for the 710 drains, an old and then an updated version though they look basically the same. There is a closed slit at the bottom.
Test each drain by pouring water down them slowly, see if they drain of if the back up. If they arent clogged and they are draining maybe there is an issue with the sunroof seal, not closing all they way or gaps?
