Oil Capacity Question (General Knowledge)

Hello everyone.

I’ve been wondering for quite a while but can’t seem to find an answer anywhere. My engine is a 4Matic M272, and according to the maintenance capacity forum stickied here, the 4Matic and RWD C300 have different filling capacities. The 4Matic is roughly 7L while the RWD is roughly 8L.

Is there a smaller oil pan or something? I’ve never heard of the engines having different oil capacities for the literal exact same engine. I don’t want to under or overfill, but logically I can’t make sense of why they’d be different.

Thank you!

What does your Operator's Manual state?

For the M276, the engine oil capacity is 6.5 LITERS (not quarts).

You always check the oil level with the dipstick, car level, engine at operating temperature, and engine off for at least 5 minutes.

I’m away from my car for the rest of the day, so I figured I’d post here and ask.

And it’s not check it cold? I’ve always been told to check it cold.

You could do it cold. But check your manual for the proper procedures and capacities.

MB specify in their Workshop manual to check the oil 3 to 4 minutes after shutting down the engine once it has reached normal operating temperature.

The reason for the different oil capacity is the 4matic has the front axle going right through the oil pan.

I have the M272 with 4matic. When i do oil changes I usually end up putting in 7 quarts of oil. But dont go off of what others do.

When you check the oil level there should be a dot on the bottom of the dipstick tube, right in the middle of the Min-Max lines. Fill level should be right in the middle, at the dot.

My operators manual says that from the Min mark to the Max mark is 2 quarts of oil. Quite alot.

I have a 2009 C300 4Matic with M272 and it takes 8L(8.5 Qt) every time I've changed it. Owners manual says all models except C63 take 8.0 Liters. C63 takes 8.5Liters..
