Unhappy Coolant leak- no cranck

Hi
One of the coolant hoses(under the cam axle solenoids) fell off during driving and emptied the entire reservoir+ a bit on on to my accessory drive band.
Lost the servo steering and also a red battery indicator populated my entire screen under the speedometer. (Figured this might because of the band slipping on the servo pump and dynamo being wet of the coolant).
I put the hose back on, and started to fill new coolant in the system while the engine was running, to circulate the new coolant in to the system.
I also sprayed some water on the accessory drive band to remove the coolant.

the band started whining loudly after about 2 minutes on idle so I turned the engine off. At this point I had filled 1 litre of coolant that quickly disappeared from the coolant tank in to the system, and then 1 litre more that stayed in the tank. (Not quite sure if the cooling system already was full at this point.
I figured the whining noise came because of the wet accessory drive band, so I decided to start the engine again and then to wait it out until it dried up by the heat of the engine.

Everything appears normal, no check engine light, missing coolant, no low battery indicator, no nothing.
When I turn the key my headlights light up, then turn off as the engine is about to start, the lights turn off (as normal) and then I hear a sound "cklock’ sound. (A sound between a click and a thud if that makes sense).
And then my headlight light up again and nothing else happens. No cranck attempt. Still no warning/advisory lights light up on my dash. Everything seems fine.

Do you guys have any ideas about what is causing this problem?
I would really appreciate every ounce of help!

No cranks happen at all? Just the sound you described?

I believe the starter on these engines is located right below where you described the coolant to have leaked out, so I personally would be worried that it drenched the start and caused it to short out.

The sound you described sounds exactly like what it sounds like when an engine locks up too though, did the engine get ran way above temperature by any chance? This is definitely a worst case scenario but a “clunk” and then no cranking just made me think the engine was locked up. I hope it’s not that.

The sound happenens every time, and it is more like the sound from a relay so might be that.
that the starter is shortened because of the water might be a plausible explanation.
im only speculating but might it be that the starter relay is activated and that the starter is just shortening to ground?

Happy to hear it’s not locked up. I would look up a video online of the starter replacement to verify the location and then visually inspect and see if it looks soaked or anything. Don’t try to start it for a few days and see if anything has changed. It’s possible your starter bricked itself too. A failed starter will just make the click from the relay and that’s it. Try getting a second person to crank the car while you listen near the fuse box to see if that’s the clicking you hear. If it is the starter is most likely where your issue lies one way or another.

First, please identify the model and year of your car. You should never run the engine without coolant for very long. So running it while filling is not a good thing. The proper way to fill the coolant is using a vacuum fill kit such as the CTA 6520 as an example. You can find similar, less expensive kits on Amazon.

You need to scan for any codes to see if there are any "Communications with the control unit..." messages.

Where did the hose come off? There is a good chance that the coolant circuit was not completely drained. To ensure your engine didn't overheat and seize, try turning it by hand the crank pulley using a breaker bar and only clockwise from the front. If you are able to turn the engine over a complete revolution, you are probably OK. Be sure to keep any keys away from the car when you do this.

If you can complete a full revolution of the crank, then you likely have a problem with the starter. Starters are built to be exposed to the elements, but the undercarriage panels are intended to minimize exposure as well as protecting components from dirt, salt, etc.

I have a W204 200 CDI

About 24 hours after the failed start attempts I went back to my car and disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes.
I then connected the battery and tried to start. Engine started and all was fine.
I let it run for about 15 minutes to circulate the coolant to get any possible air out, before I took a ride.

any clues what was the initial problem, and was the fix just waiting or disconnecting the battery for about while, or both?

It’s really impossible to know exactly what it was, both are equally possible. Disconnecting the battery could have given it the “reset” it needed to start, but there’s a very strong chance the reason it didn’t start in the first place is the starter was soaked and shorted out. I would say the combination of both waiting and disconnecting the battery helped out.
