Serpentine belt noise

I have a continuous click-click sound coming when the engine is running. A mechanic did a preliminary diagnosis and said that the serpentine belt is touching something. I just used this kit https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mer...-272273beltkt1
How do I go about diagnosing where the serpentine belt is rubbing against something unintentionally.

When I was looking for odd noises I bought an inexpensive stethoscope. Its simple but seems to work well for locating the origin of noises. When checking the pulleys i placed the tip of the stethoscope on the head of the bolts where it wasnt spinning. The sounds can get loud so be careful.

I agree with Tim. A stethoscope makes diagnosis for these issues easy.

A second mechanic did a diagnosis and found the crankshaft pulley to be wobbly. Is it possible to DIY replace this? Any pointers?

Will have to look at your specific crankshaft pulley and see which holding tool you will need. Some pulleys allow for the tool to hold the pulley itself, or if not theres a part you install to hold the flywheel at the starter.

How does the pulley look? Awhile ago I was thinking my pulley was bad and wobbling but seems it was an allusion with the rust on it and some areas of paint removed. I cant find it now but I came across how to inspect it, basically check the rubber for cracks. To see better i stuck my phone down in there and snapped a bunch of photos to look at on the computer screen. Turns out it was in good condition.

Not second guessing the mechanic just want to be sure since it does look like a pain replacing.

I was surprised at the instructions since my starter is on the left/drivers side of the engine. Maybe because its 4matic?

My pulley looks like the one below. Check the rubber for cracks.

Do you have the 272.961 engine?

Cant really tell what pulley it is from the photo. I found part #'s for the 272.961. Pulley part# 2720300803 or 2730300803

Looks like they have the tool that will hold the pulley.

I replaced the crankshaft pulley (aka harmonic load balancer) at a shop and most of the sound seems to have gone away. Will monitor it for a few days. I am really unhappy with mercedes quality that a car that has been gently driven has this kind of a problem within 150K miles. Even the shop guy said that it shouldn't happen till at least 180K miles.

150k, 180k? What’s a few 10k between friends?

At least it didn’t fly off the crankshaft destroying everything under the hood like my ‘80s Aerostar did…

During this I also replaced the cam magnets to stop a suspected oil leak. During this process unfortunately the mechanic dropped a lot of oil on the belt. Though he cleaned it later, I am concerned that the oil on the belt would cause it to slip. Any thoughts on this?

If it were me I would probably remove the belt and clean it in the sink with dish soap and warm water then dry it. Or spray a little soapy water on the belt with it still installed, soft bristle brush to remove any oil then rinse it clean.

I wouldnt use any harsh cleaners on the rubber. I was searching around quick and seems things like engine degreaser may harm the belt.

I just use some brake clean and spray the belt while its running to clean it. A slight tick or small squeak is normal IMO.

That click-click sound could mean your serpentine belt is rubbing due to misalignment or a faulty pulley. Check for rubber dust, fraying, and spin each pulley by hand for smoothness. Use a straightedge to check alignment, especially the tensioner. Just like a well-fitted Men’s Reversible Belt, everything needs to line up perfectly.
