is HUD worth it?

is it true that the HUD wont display all information unless you also buy the driver assist package and other safety features? if that is the case, this makes HUD totally worthless in my opinion. i dont plan on getting the driver assist package, so can anybody confirm if this is true or not? that would be an easy $1000 save right there.

if it displays all info even without the DA package then i will still get it.

Without driver assistance package, it will still show speed, radio, nav. With the safety package, you also get collision notifications and drifting out of lane pictures.

Anyone know if the US will get speed limit notification in the instrument cluster?

All the pictures I have seen show that it is the same system as in the S class.

This video might shed some light for you

starting at the 1:30 mark talks about what can be displayed

I also want to add that my family has a Lexus RXh and it has the HUD. We got it because it sounds so cool and is one of those YOLO options. However, i still find myself glancing down at the speedo to check my speed. Seeing radio/volume I guess is somewhat helpful. The best thing about it is probably going to be the navigation prompts. However, Im saving my money this time around.

Is it possible to turn off the HUD if needed ? Also, how is the field of view of the info displayed ? In other word, only the driver can see the display or will the passenger, backseat passenger be able to see it too ?

I have it and really like it. You can turn it off and only the driver can see it unless the rear seat passenger behind you looks over your shoulder.

I have the w204 as a loaner and because I'm tall I can't see the top of the speedometer. Hopefully this isn't the same on the w205! I did get HUD though as we'll with drivers assistance package etc.

I wouldn't say its necessary tbh and more of a yolk moment. Although I haven't got my new car yet...

Wanted the HUD too, but 950 is a bit expensive as a stand alone option, then i pre-ordered the Navdy, since its external, i can place it in any car. Its coming early 2015, which is perfect, because thats the same time ill be picking up my new C class!

If that's anything like the "Pre-Orders" of other Kickstarter style projects you can expect it to realistically come out a year or three later.

As someone said...it's one of those nice to have features...I didn't order one as I have a car with HUD and there was no wow factor for me. However if you noticed in the youtube vid...the info that appears in the HUD can also be displayed in your instrument cluster as well. It's neat if you've never had it...

This might sound stupid but one of the main reasons I dont like the HUD is the large ugly hole on top of the dash.

yea, you're right, that is stupid.

I plan to buy so having the vehicle with HUD is worth the price. Sure, 900 bucks is steep but think of it like buying a fancy new iPad

I hadn't realised that. Does anyone know approximately how big the hole is and whether it's open or covered so as to stop stuff falling down into it? This plus the cost could well put me off ordering this option.

Thanks Vic. The hole for the HUD looks far bigger than I'd imagined. I think I'll give it a miss especially as the tablet style screen is set quite high in the dashboard and the speedometer is quite clear.

I ordered my car in June and took delivery in July and during the wait time (6 weeks), I managed to convince myself I needed HUD. Previously drove a Civic with the speedo sitting atop the dash so got used to looking there and preferred the digital speedo over traditional speedo - just got used to it. I phoned the dealer up and the wait for an HUD option in the UK was about 6 months (and a cost of £825). It's just not that popular. Still, with traffic sign assist, I thought it would be a nice to have.

I didn't go for it in the end, partly because the Civic was falling apart and needed work done to it and I needed the W205 to be delivered asap. Glad I didn't spend the extra cash in the end. For one thing, the dash looks cleaner with no hole. Secondly, the information from the HUD display is replicated in the instrument cluster between the speedo and rev counter, including the digital speedo

I imagine for those that have done, this would add to the resale value.

Looked at the Navdy and although looks great and would be a great addition to a car with no bells and whistles, presents a problem with drivers like me who have COMAND and bluetooth installed in the car. If a call comes in, it would come through on the Navdy I imagine which isn't hardwired to the car audio (therefore wouldn't stop the radio/ pause CD track) or play phone audio through the car speakers. I also have COMAND, which would then be rendered useless if I used the Navdy/ iPhone for maps.

Posted Speed Limit?

Does the US version display the posted speed limit? Various reviews have made mention of it as well as a few pictures.

No posted speed limit on the HUD and anywhere else in my US C300 for that matter; the red circled speed in your pic is missing from my HUD. Of course I may not have configured it correctly but I doubt it. I for one didn't even noticed that there was a hole there for the projector on the dash until someone mentioned above. Still, glad I have the HUD.

I got the HUD because I liked the wizardry of it. Having now used it for a month or so I am very glad I did get it. Having the speed and navigation instructions has made driving in unfamiliar areas with complex lane changes etc much easier. I would suggest to anyone who is considering HUD, but is unsure, to try it out in an unfamiliar city driving situation. It is an added expense that, if not useful to you, could be spent on a more useful feature for your particular situation. For me, it's great.

HUD works very well with the Navigation System. It shows the distance and direction of the next turn well in advance. The Navi doesn't do that on the COMAND screen.

The HUD does not display info from the driver assistance package other than the speed set with Distronic plus.

I got it, and I'm glad I did. All the negatives mentioned here just don't bother me. It's just nice to have all that information available in your field of view. Always having the road you are on in the HUD comes in real handy in unfamiliar places.
