Big News from MB Egypt

Inside story (Not yet official) is that MB Egypt are doing the following due to petrol issues with their new and old cars (2013, 2014, 2015).

Mercedes announces modified engine software in the C180 model 2015 delivered in December 2014 to become 122 hp and not 156, means reduced BHP of 34 and therefore can use gasoline RON92 and was therefore canceled the adoption of RON95.

What do you guys think about that?? Is it even theoretically possible or correct for something like this to be done?
Is it logical to buy an approx. 500,000 pound car and have it modified for 122HP? Come on its a freaking C Class BENZ!!!

However, BMW cars (320i & 328i specially) run 2.0 L engines with 245HP and do run on RON92. How is that possible and what are we not understanding...

Any input would be appreciated.

Yep! ~ These are lean burn stratified charge DI engines. They require decent gas to keep knock under control. Detuning (increasing timing retard capability at the onset of knock) will be the only way to make them run on low octane fuel that probably sometimes battles to meet the control spec.

BMW's 328i Turbo 4 cylinder, as an example, Will suffer exactly the same issues if BMW is honest about it.

It's not Benz fault. It's a fuel problem in Egypt. These engines are designed to run on Euro5 fuel of the correct Octane rating.

The option is for manufacturers is to fit old, less fuel efficient, obsolete engines for some markets. They are reluctant to keep such engines in production.

Egypt's refineries (EGPC) need to get their act together or import finished product from the Gulf or Europe. They don't have to meet Euro 4, 5 or 6 but they do have to meet basic octane requirements or you are going to be stuck running 45 year old Peugeot 504's.
