Driver assistance and Command

Can someone please provide their description of these options? Not interested in personal tastes or likes. More how they work. What gets disabled with Command in motion? How does the driver and steering work, just in traffic? All speeds? Hands off wheel for about how long? Thank you in advance Helen

You should look at Mercedes Benz YouTube channel.
Or look at the online owners manual.

And, um, which pages exactly does that show which parts of Command are inoperative when in motion? Or with driver assistance how long you have before the system cuts off? Or how well it holds in slow or higher speed traffic? I think the answer to all of these reference to book or youtube channel would be...it doesn't, which is why asked here.

;-) Some well meant advise: Don't ever call Mercedes tech support or your dealer, if you always expect a relevant and correct answer the first time you ask ;-) (sorry megaoctane/HelenR .. No disrespect here .. ;-)

Hmmm, no. I watched them before asking here, and even though it gives some basic understanding to the systems, the Mercedes info doesn't address any of my questions about it as originally posted about the nuances of the systems, differences in traffic versus open road at speed, and what sections of command are disabled in motion. It would best be answered by someone with Command or with Driver assistance and first hand experience. Thank you for trying though.

Regarding Comand it is pretty much video you cannot watch while driving, the thing I love is that new route input still is available when driving as this often is disabled in other brands.

Great info, thank you!
Can you input only by voice? or can a passenger type in while driving? Except video, it's all open in motion? WOW! Great!

Do you have driver assist/distronic? How is it real world in slow and high speed traffic?

You can use all three input methods while driving, the turn dial, touch pad and voice commands.
Voice commands is very useful as it is very responsive and easy to use as well as causing the least distractions of the road.
I would guess that the Linguatronic system is much more useful in an English spoken country however I use it as much as I can.

I do not have distronic or distronic plus as I do not cruise a lot of freeways, but I have tried both systems and the Distronic plus is very impressive and also handles pretty heavy traffic well even though it can be quite scary at first.

I do not know how the packages are bundled in the US, but lane keeping assist and "Dead Angle" sensor is for me more interesting than the Distronic systems,

I find the voice recognition to be a bit useless tbh. Unless it's my accent.
The manual says it can be fine tuned, will have to have a play with it and see if I can make it better.

I tried the other day and it came up with something that was nowhere near to what I said.

Well, my spoken english isnt very good but no misread instructions yet

It could be an accent issue in combination with a female voice, I have always wondered if the cars are mainly built by men for men regarding the Linguatronic system, hopefully it isnt so

Try the manual "teach in" method and see if it improves.

I was using the driver assistance package today in traffic and made the following two videos.

I also tested the steering assist on Bay bridge at 55mph and it takes about 35 seconds for the alert to put your hands back on the wheel. A slight touch gives you another 35 seconds.

So after activating Distronic does a female voice announce "your are now free to move about the cabin"?

Pretty amazing stuff. Thanks for the demonstration. Can't wait!

Very cool vids, I liked the music too. I'm assuming your hands there just in case, and like how it just seems to need your occasional touch on the wheel instead of a hard grip to keep it from disengaging.

In the manual it shows at a slow speed it's stop and go and follows car w/o lane markings. At higher speed, it only uses the lane markings. In your experience, is it equally as good and seamless at this? Does it wander much between the lane? How often would you be apt to use it for 100% of your highway travel?

I took some more videos yesterday on the Bay bridge at higher speeds. I hope these answer your questions.

1 min and 22 seconds of handsfree is the longest I've recorded thus far.

This one demonstrates lane merging and curve handling.

This is a longer video in toll traffic but it does go through the toll by itself.

Not perfect, looses a lane at the end.

Also on Command, the owners manual can't be accessed if your are driving. I suspect the same is true for any other "reading" functions, as well as video as already mentioned.

So what happens if you just ignore the audio warning and the red flashing light .. does the system keep going or will it disconnect, bring the car to a stop, eject the driver ..?

In that case the car makes a ding sound and the steering assist is disengaged. The distronic still works for speed and distance control but you are now on your own for steering. There is a steering wheel icon. It is green when the steering assist is working and white when it is not. Unfortunately there are instances where it looses the lane markings (through an intersection for example) and it will disengage without an audio warning.... You have to stay somewhat attentive.

It takes a little bit of practice to learn the uses and limitations of the steering assist. Where it shines is in bumper to bumper traffic or in freeway cruising at high speed in pathways that are relatively straight or very slight bends. It is Ok to not great for everything else in between
