new C300 with Engine noise
#26
Quick reply
Seems like like w205 c classes built before 2015 had some glitches (wind noise, burmester audio problem, and some engine problems) I saw reviews that said the later builds (2015 and up), the issues were fixed. I also think it had something to do with the Alabama plant. If it were built in Germany it wouldn't have had a problem.

I am reading these scary posts about a need for an engine recall, big problem, etc...and wonder. Do we really have a massive problem with the C-class engine? Or maybe some of us have a problem, but not all of us, and not all engine clicking sounds, as described in the forum, are the same? I would like to know.
I have heard a very faint clicking noise a few times. It appeared after acceleration and during coasting, for several seconds. I have mentioned it to the service at my dealer, they "looked at it", and found nothing. At least, I have the evidence it was reported, in case of a big problem later. Right now, I don't believe the sound is pointing to any problems, maybe it is normal for fuel injection, as some suggested. Still, I would like to hear from somebody who has solid understanding of what is going on.

I really want to see if anyone can get a fall TSB and see the range of issue. Is it really just before Mid June 2015 or more specific in time line.

Correction of the date before which 2015 C300 engines may be defective
I have corrected the date before which 2015 C300 engines may be defective because of defective wrist pins (as previously shown in my post #18): "The defective parts are in engines made before April 20, 2015. [This is the correct information, as corrected on 01/03/05. See note below.])
[Note added 01-03-15: see the comment by deafcon at https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...il#post6612605. So that readers do not have go to deafcon's comment, here is the operative sentence, "Any M274 built at the Infiniti plant in Dechard before serial number ~43000, or built in Germany before roughly serial ~400000 could develop the problem. New wrist pins went into production engines starting April 20th.]

My car still at the dealer for it's engine rebuild. Since November 27th.
Today I counted up the business days (Mon-Fri) my car has spent at the dealer in 12 months over 7 separate service visits.
51 days. The best or nothing indeed!

Correction of cut-off date for defective 2015 C300 engines
See my corrected information above in post #30 about the date before which 2015 C300 engines may be defective because of defective wrist pins. The incorrect information I previously gave in my post #18 has been corrected. Of course, your build date in Sept. 2014 is long before either date. So you will have to continue to listen carefully.

"Sounding cheap"?
I don't know what your intentions are, but maybe you are considering just living with the ticking. Nobody knows what happens if you don't get the problem fixed, but you'll have worse than your car just "sounding cheap".

Updated: sent car to dealer 2 weeks ago. the guy drove my car and said right away "there is too much noise in this one" So 2 days later called said the rubber seal of the steering column on the "fire wall" is deformed which let engine noise leak into the cabin.
However the part is back ordered in German and there is no ETA. I have been drove a w204 for 2 wks now and don't know how long I will wait.

These are not quiet engines, and all exhibit some direct injection chatter. How much different is the sound of bad wrist pins from the normal sounds of this engine?
If there is no audible clicking noise while cruising, just the normal buzz of the turbo four, would this indicate that the engine is free of this defect? Also, does anyone know how many engines are affected by this and, if widespread, will there be a recall to check all engines made before the April, 2015 date?

Again with the hmmm. Mine makes the noise at redline, sounds like it's coming from motor not exhaust, why I figured it's a turbo noise.
I saw the wrist pin thread and I definitely have a tick, if you find the keyfob thread there is a reason to bring it back to the dealer.
I have a lot of vacation days left to use before April - weird policy where vacation isn't tied to calendar. I hate to spend them at the dealer but I'll take the tech out somewhere where we can push the car at WOT and see what they have to say.
Probably a couple of week at least until I can report on that.

Warning to anyone owning a W205 C300 built before April 2015: Heed the warnings in this thread. Mine did not have terrible engine noise but when I brought it in for Service A last week I asked them to check the TSB to see if it applies to my car. When they asked what I was hearing, I simply told them there is some ticking noise mostly when cold. I also admitted that I was not sure if this was abnormal or not, as I have nothing to compare it to. I asked them to check into it for themselves and let me know what they think. Two days later the dealer informed me that the pistons need to be replaced.
My advice is that everyone owning a C300 W205 take your car to your dealer with the TSB information and ask them to check it out. I printed this tread and gave it to them. When I dropped the car off, it was evident that they were taking this problem seriously, so something bad must be going on with these engines. If you are leasing, maybe you don't care. However, if you own the car you better care! Consider what replacing the pistons and possibly more due to this problem will cost when the car is off warranty.
BTW, I complained once again about wind noise and they are finally ordering acoustic glass. I also showed them the thread from this site with the German bulletin. Their attitude was much different about the issue this time around. No baloney about "they all do it" this time.
Will be interested in how this all turns out. They did tell me to keep the MB loaner until the work is complete. Looks like 2-4 weeks.
Does anyone know if the engine problem would be cause for a legitimate lemon claim in California?

I'm not sure there will ever be a first year of any model without some issues. The good news is MB will stand behind their cars and make it right if something is wrong.

Calling all cars! (W205s with 2-ltr 4-cyl engines built before 04/20/15)
The date an engine was built is probably NOT the same as the production date of the car! The production date of a car can be easily obtained from the dealer. The engine production date (or the serial number of the ENGINE) has to be obtained from the Mercedes Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC). Use of the EPC is free, but it was not made for amateurs. If this information is necessary (because a car was made around the cutoff date), I recommend that the owner not tangle with the EPC, but go straight to his or her dealer.

I was redirected to this thread (Thank you, gfmohn).
To paraphrase my other post, is this problem just a noise or something more serious (reduced engine life, etc.)?
Thanks.

So has anyone else got their car back after the rebuild. I have about 300 miles on mine since I got it back a week ago. Engine is much quieter, seems to run fine, power seems the same etc.
But my gas mileage is terrible. I have dropped about 4-5mpg vs the numbers I was getting in late November. It was warmer, but we already had the winter fuel blend so it is not that. I guess maybe it will get better as the engine breaks in again?
