OIL NUT

Ok -- so I am buying into the " don't change the break-in oil" before the 1st 10k oil interval due to M274 engine design.
.
.
However, what is the forums thoughts related to DI & intake valve gunk that builds up over time. Coming from a BMW twin turbo that needed intake cleaning every 40k.
.
.
To mitigate this issue - many believed in oil catch cans (BMS) and running an oil with a very low NOACK 6% like Red Line or PPlat.
.
.
Actually, I think BMW just switched to a Shell product away from Castrol that has a lower NOACK (particulate) or cleaner oil. Suggestions for my C300?
.
.
In addition, any engine design features that the M274 engine has that helps reduce intake valve gunk?

The NOACK value of an oil has to do with it's tendency for the lighter fractions to evapourate off causing viscosity rise. It has nothing to do with particulates. Carefull base oil blending reduces NOACK values.

Only use Benz 229.5 approved oils in these engines. NOACK is part of the Benz approval regime. (Redline etc. is not approved)

Most of the inlet fouling on DI engines comes from VI improver burn on to the valve tulip due to poor oil control down the valve guides & captive engine breathers.

Benz has been designing diesel engines (DI) for so long that they understand valve guide oil control.

Benz engines do not foul themselves up like Porsche, & older VAG group designs until VW/Audi put a LP injector into the inlet system.

Benz use multipulse injectors on their DI engines. To keep valve tulips clean they give the injectors a quick pulse while the inlet valves are open so that the detergent in the fuel can keep the valve tulip clean.

Outstanding!

I really do appreciate your response ~ well educated.

Ok - so after the initial 10k oil change -- OCI @ 5k looks good?
.
.
Not all 229.5 oils are created equal -- any top tier recommendations? M1 0W-40 is good but what is your preference.
.
Thanks

All 229.5 oils are pretty much equal. Mobil 1 0W-40 is a very good product. Availability usually drives choice from the approvals listing.

You can reduce oil change interval if you want to but there is very little to be gained. Benz oil change intervals are conservative & we have looked at 1000's of used oil samples & they look fine at 10K. When change interval was 13K they looked a little more tired but still OK.

It's my job. See my profile.

Since 123Britt is from Alabama, and Glyn is from SA, just to clarify, the 10k vs 13k mentioned above is km or miles?

Miles ~ Sorry I should have noted. I always answer US based questions in miles or quote both Miles & Km's ~ my bad.
