Air Balance fragrance

Had a few questions:

1. Has anyone experimented with different fragrances using the refillable bottle?

2. When I picked up my c300 they gave me a free bottle of Freeside. It looks to be the same part number as the S class fragrance system so I assume they are the same size.

3. I couldn't find any info on whether if we choose to use the refillable bottle whether we needed to use perfume that had a certain percentage of alcohol to oil or whether we could use something like an essential oil or fragrance oil. Wondered if anyone has seen anything written anywhere? There's no delineation in the manual.

I think this is going to be a dealer or direct ask of MB because I too would like to know the same answers.

This makes for interesting reading though; https://mbworld.org/forums/new-s-cla...e-bottles.html

So, not oils. Anything alcohol&water based is fine. Oils would damage the system or your interior. Frankly given the cost, once mine's empty I'm going to refill with an alcohol&water based perfume and see how it goes. They sell empty ones that you can fill, but it seems you can also re-use the pre-filled ones too.

I read that they last a pretty long time? How long do you expect each canister to last until a refill is required?

I suspect this is down to the amount of time the system is enabled/mileage/time in the car/the air balance setting (low/med/high). Mine's on full whack as I love the smell... so that means it will probably not last long. They should have renamed the setting 'cheap/expensive/madly expensive smell'.

I didn't like the freeside that come with mine from the factory, so I bought the Nightlife fragrance. Cost around AU$170 which I thought was insane, however, it is meant to last 1500 hours on setting '2' and that is 1500 hours of running time only.
Apparently bottles can be refilled with the same fragrance but they recommend you buy an empty vial for AU$136 lol

It is the same setup as the S class.. I did ask about filling up my own empty Vial but they didn't know as I was the first customer they had ever sold a refill too.

I think they're about £80 or so in the UK. No way I can justify that and I'll do my best to open up the one I have once its done because reading online someone compared the empty one they supply and the used/pre-filled one and there's no difference apart from a seal on the pre-filed one. The only caveat will be it will have to be washed really well to ensure no cross over of scent.

Wow, uncalled for. I hope my ego doesn't change when I get my first Mercedes.

FYI, the golf was a present from my sister when I was still a medical student, and so it's a very sentimental gift for me regardless if its a crappy car in the eyes of others.

Nothing against a Golf. But an MB isn't for everyone. Just like the options for one. Or a glade freshener. That said, I'd only be embarrassed to be on VW forum asking why people optioned their cars the way they did. If you want a less expensive car or options, there are choices.

No offense met. Point was, there's choices. Sounds ego MAY be an issue if you're on another car forum asking why people option cars the way they choose.

Was I condescending when I suggested it? No I wasn't, and so it did not warrant your kind of response.

A Golf is an option. As is an option for air freshener from the store or air balance system in an MB. Nothing condescending meant. No need to be defensive. Sorry if feelings hurt, not intended.

To come on the forum as one of your first posts saying "why not just buy a $5 air freshener" is condescending.

To get back on the topic, I didn't option this for my build, but $325 seems a fair price for the freshener, plus double filter and ionizer. Are filters the same and just two of them? Or are they completely different?

It did appear to be a condescending remark, however it could of also have been interpreted as a "tongue in cheek" sort of comment.

As a $400 option in Australia I found it a very reasonable price, for the fragrance system, filtration and ioniser setup. I spent nearly $95,000 on a C class , another $400 was hardly going to break the bank. It was an automatic tick for me.

Uhm, no I didn't intend to sound like a smart alec nor does that constitute as condescending.

It was just a genuine question, and of course you're free to choose what you want to do, but when I'm reading comments regarding paying quite a sum for an empty container - I want to know what people think about using an expensive fragrance over a more 'affordable' option. I'll admit, it was a poor choice of words to write and I apologize for that but I didn't patronize anyone.

That would be interesting to see. If one bottle/canister lasted a year then I could see why you would go for the £80 option. But if you're buying 6 a year then that is really a kick in the nuts/wallet.

My main issue is the glove compartment space that gets occupied. The space isn't generous to begin with so losing circa 25% to the AB bottle may be an issue. How are you finding the available storage space in the glove box?

It depends what you want to store. I don't put much in the car because it's a source of rattles. So glovebox currently has a glasses case and cloth in. Centre console is gloves. Door has a scarf.

I got my c class (second hand) and it is including the Air balance package, which i really appreciate.fragrance is nice and not invasive. As the fragrance bottle was finish, i checked the price and it is really expensive in the dealers shop!so i decided to open the bottle by my self and refill it with a Air Wick ambient fragrance from supermarket...well... The result is horrible...killed my nose! Why they do not sell refill bottles without charging the crazy cost for the glass bottle!?!?! Ok, the answer is obvious, but they are killing their own sells! They could sell much more refills if price was reasonable!

All high end fragrances cost. It amazes me people buy luxury cars and then go cheap. Like spending £30,000 and looking for cheap tyres. Just pay for the fragrance, it's tailored for the car and mines lasted over a year so far. Don't go cheap.. Air Wick.. Seriously? Lol

I know your meaning, and i can agree with you somehow. But look it from another point of view:why wasting money?is it worth that money? You can consider that even the finest discontinued fragrance M7 by YSL with real Agarwood Oud will cost to collectionist no more than 300usd for 100ml. the cost for mercedes fragrance is almost 100usd for 15ml. One more point is the wastage of the flacon, that could be easily reused for refill. Then, as you said, it can be considered silly to buy a luxury car and then mind to spend 100usd for the fragrance. Just point of views...
