Well I'm totally impressed by the fuel consumption

As you can tell from the title I'm really impressed with the fuel consumption of my C300 so far. I'm comparing it to my previous C250 4Matic V6.

I have had it for a month now and it has done over 5000km as it is a demo that i bought. So it is probably well and truly run in.

I went on a 120km drive yesterday afternoon mainly on country roads and highway, but maybe 5-10% in city with traffic lights too. I also sat when I arrived at my destination for about 20 minutes with the engine and the air con on, waiting for my appointment to arrive. Mostly I just drove with the traffic but I spent most of the time at the speed limit +20kph.

Well, I got home and the fuel consumption was indicating 6.8 l/100kms. That is 34.5/41.5 mpg US/UK respectively. So far the car computer has been quite accurate so I have no reason to doubt it this time. My old C250 wouldn't have been anywhere near that.....

I realize that fuel consumption isn't everyone's cup of tea but I thought I would share anyway.

Cheers

I'm also very impressed by the fuel consumption.
I got a 220 bluetech diesel and it keep on getting better the more I drive it.

I have 18.000 km with mine and after a 3.500 km euro road trip in Germany and France the average consumption was 4.8l/100km.
This includes all the city driving I did during the trip but most of the kilometers was of course done on highways.

I can only dream of 4.8 l/100km haha

We're stuck with the petrol versions here in Canada for now. Even my 2007 diesel Smart Car only did 4.8 l/100km on a good day!

My car averages around 9 l/100km. I drive mostly in the city where consumption is rather high (12 to 15 l/100km), especially while commuting when driving at low speed (30-40 km/h). I don't get on the highway often, but when I do, I can get as down to 5 l/100km @120km/h on echo mode (AC is on). setting Comfort mode brings it up to 6 l/100km (AC setup changes from echo to comfort).
There is though, a bit of a difference (2 l/100km) between the on board computer and my actual fuel log (showing around 11.37 l/100km).
As of today, I've done around 3300 KM on my car.

Because of all the hills and steep grades, I don't live in an ideal environment for great fuel economy numbers. Still, this is the most frugal AWD car I've ever owned, even beating out a couple of Audi A4's I've had.

I have not reset the cumulative computer numbers since getting the car in April, and it now shows an average of 28.0 mpg (US.) My best run, about 90% highway, was 35.1 mpg. I have checked the computer readout with actual measurements, and they were almost spot on with the car being slightly conservative.

For an AWD sedan, that can produce 0-60 times in the low to mid six second range, this is a pretty impressive little turbo 4.

Great report.

In what mode or modes was your car during your trip? All Eco? Comfort? Combination? Pretty flat or hilly?

Thanks

The computer is NEVER correct on fuel consumption and is always optimistic about it.

The only way you really know what fuel consumption is running is to put fuel in the car, reset the trip odometer, drive around for 1/2 a tank or so, then fill it again at the SAME PUMP and calculate MPG yourself.

My BMW is about 10%-15% optimistic about what it is really consuming for fuel vs what I calculate when I put gas in the tank.

Thanks. I drove all the time in Comfort mode with the stop start activated. The terrain didn't have many steep hills and the road was in long straight sections mostly. Driving from Kitchener area, Ontario to Fergus. Over the entire distance there is only about 300 feet of elevation change. The weather was a pretty constant 24C. So, the driving conditions were fairly ideal, but this is a drive that I made for 2 years of my ownership of the C250 and I could expect a summer average of about 9 l/100km driving the same way with that car.

I also have to agree with Stan that even with my limited experience with this car, the fuel readout is pretty accurate. It has agreed with the pump closely so far. A far cry from my old Mk.1 Golf GTI that I owned back in Scotland. That fuel read out was off its trolley and would often be out by 10mpg!

That's not been my experience with this car at all. I have checked actual fuel consumption against the car's computer several times and, surprisingly, it has been very accurate. This is the only car I have owned that seems able to produce an accurate reading. My first C300 was also right on.

C300 4MATIC; driving in econ mode; using only premium (91 or 93 octane), I get 35+ on highways without traffic. In rush hour (60 mins to make the 25 minute, 20 mile trip), still get 29 mpg

I drove mostly in C mode. Mixed highway and local. Stop/Start on. Not much hills.

On long highway drive (50+ miles), it's about 35 MPG. This is a bit less impressive as I would think it would be slightly higher.

For local, just came back from 10-mile drive, 35 mph speed limit. Average 18 mph and 24 MPG.

Overall, its about 27 MPG. This is pretty good given the amount of local roads I have to drive.

Of the mpg you state, what does the car state was the average speed?

It states 60kph, but remember I said that I was stationary with the engine running for about 20 minutes. That was 20 minutes out of about 2 hours. So if I take out the 20 by multiplying the stated 60kph by 6/5, I get about 72kph.

My 1.8 turbocharged four calc'd about 34 1/2 during a recent round trip to Carmel/Monterrey (CA).

Normally, around town my numbers are Mean: 27, Median and Mode are both 26.8. The little coupe's computer is only slightly optimistic (surprise, surprise!).

Maybe you should consider the C200 or C250 petrol engine. I get almost the same l/100km. On highway 7 l/100km (comfort mode) and city 9-10 (comfort). Sometimes I get more than 13 but only for short distance driving and traffic. Here is a video. I see you are from Belgium. Greetings from a neighbour I live in the Netherlands (I got the petrol one because of the horrible tax system here).
