Is parking assist package worth the wait?

So that's the choice I'll have to make: custom ordered C450 in two weeks without the parking assist package (as some of you know, they're out of those for the year), or the exactly same car with the parking assist at the end of January/early February.
Talking about the parking assist package, I'm not sure if I'll use parktronic more than a couple times a year (if at all), but I like the idea of having the 360 view and parking sensors.
What do you say?

I was made aware of this back in October and for me I decided to pass on the 360. I played with it in the S class on the lot but didn't find the value in waiting.

My 2c: don't care about parking assist, but love 360 view and sensors. Front camera is really useful when parking against the curb: keeps front bumper free of scratches...

How is the 360/front camera activated? Do you have to press a button every time you're parking or it automatically turns on under a certain speed?

I don't live in the US - so I can't comment on the cost of the car vs average income - but in South Africa, Mercedes is quite an expensive brand (compared to average income).

As such - given the cost involved of getting a Merc - I'd rather wait and get the exact car I can afford - instead of settling for something second best.

Rear view camera turns on when in reverse, switching to drive activates front camera which turns off automatically after car gets to 15 mph or so. In split view, one part of the screen shows car from birds perspective which I found very useful as well...

Yes, that much I know, I'm wondering what happens when you are parking, if the camera turns back on or you have to press a button or something.

It would absolutely NOT be worth the wait for me. I could have had it on my 2016, but chose to spend my money (or save it) on other upgrades I felt were more important to me.

I parallel park about two or three times a year. I also have no issues judging how far a curb is from the front of the car when pulling in to a spot in a lot. So, for me, this would be virtually useless and I did not spec it out when I ordered my car.

It really all is a question of need. If you think you need it, get it. Otherwise, save the money.

I have tried using it 3 times but I have overridden it each time. The first time I drove too close to the car by the side of me before switching it on. As the car reversed it was about to take out the door mirrors of both cars.

The second time the space including a drop kerb so the car got confused and seemed to want to park on the sidewalk.

The third time it didn't see the space I was looking at.

I will try again but all the boxes have to be ticked for it to work.

Interesting - I did not know the parking package was "out of stock". In Canada, parking package (parktronic and sensors) comes as part of the Premium package (does not include 360 cam though) - Premium package includes Burmester and Comand Nav, so I think 98% of C450's will be sold with this package. I would assume that they have put enough parts aside to fill their Canadian orders...

I live in a city with plenty of parallel parking, little kids and tight parking garage spaces. That made parking sensors pretty valuable, but the activation range of the Parktronic wasn't very confidence-inspiring when backing out. So, I just added a backup camera as well. Given the choice, I think the camera is more useful than the Parktronic. I think rear visibility is significantly worse than in the W204, whereas it's still fairly easy to see where the bonnet ends. Combine that with my partner's propensity to back out of spaces at excessive speeds, and a camera become a necessity.

The auto parking is more of a gimmick that doesn't seem to work consistently, either in finding a spot or actually parking properly. The reality is, unless you cannot parallel park, you really just want to make sure you are not hitting the cars surrounding the spot and that you do not get too close to the curb. The 360 camera (which unfortunately was too late to add to my build) solves all those issues. However, I believe that the parking package also includes the front and rear sensors, so you will lose that audible warning.

Are you saying the 360 camera would aid the sensors? That not so on my wife's gls 400.

According to the mb.ca parktronic comes with premium package plus, not premium package. Anyway, the cool thing is in Canada you can get the 360 separately and that's my main reason for considering the US parking package.

Right. As I'm saying, I don't care much about the parktronic and wouldn't spend the money on it, but I like the 360, looks like it can be really helpful when parking/moving out of tight spaces, and in the US it comes only as a part of the parking package.
