Hi all

Please can someone help me, this is doing my head in!
My 9 month old 220 amg line estate went back to the dealers recently to have a job done under warranty, this work involved taking out the entire dash board and centre console.
Before my car went back to the dealer I am sure that my ashtray/cup holder compartment lit up like a Christmas tree at night, I still have two lights lit on each side of the cup holder side but not in the larger space at the rear of the compartment, I'm convinced this use to light up, not any more and it's so annoying.
Please can someone confirm that this area does light up? Or is it me imagining things.
Thanks in advance.
Simon.

There's the twin colored lights on / near the cup holders - but there's also a white light on the ridge that divides that compartment (i.e. forward of the cup holders). So to answer your question, yes the forward compartment should be lit.

I actually have the opposite problem.
I have a 2016 C300h and the section you describe is illuminated, yes. But the cup holders are not although they have the slots for the lamps.
On the 2015 demo car I had, both were lit up.
Cost saving gone mad!

Does anyone know if this a possible retrofit?

Can you post some pictures? I only see an amber light around the cigarette lighter.

I'm curious to see this as well. On my C300 Sport, the cig lighter (I hope no one uses these awful things anymore) is illuminated around it, but the two cup holders are not. And I have the Interior Package with Ambient Lighting. I wouldn't mind if my cup holder was lit though as I do use it a lot and at night, I find myself fumbling down there.

I have an orange light ring around the lighter, and two small lights at the back that are the color of the ambient light.

I see you're in Australia. Maybe in Australia that's the way they come, but my US Built C300 Sport isn't lit in the cup holders like that at all.

Interesting.. you'd think if you have ambient lighting the parts would be similar if not standard. Do you have slots where mine shows the ambient lighting LEDs?

I'll check when I'm in my car next, but I don't think so.

My C450 with the ambient light package has exactly what StanNH describes although the lights through the slits for the cup holders is hard to see but they are there. But there are definitely no light in the rear area that I can see. Maybe North American C-class don't have that ?

Exactly what I have in my C300 Sport. The back area has ambient lighting in the Amber color, but the cup holders themselves aren't lit at all. I will check to see if there is a place for led's in the cup holders, but my memory says there isn't.

The US models have a cigarette lighter and an ashtray in the front; not the 12V plug with a cap and that open area. The ashtray is removable, but we do not get that front lighting. This obviously varies depending on the market.

What's odd is that cigarette smoking is probably lower in the US than in other parts of the world, and most cars sold here no longer even offer a lighter and ashtray as standard equipment. Maybe MB-USA knows something we don't.

I've been going through the schematics and as best I can tell it is as follows:

There's 3 codes involved here:
  • 301 Cigarette Lighter with Front Ashtray Illumination
  • 877 Ambiance Illumination; and possibly..
  • 876 Interior Lights Package

Code 877 will give you the twin ambiance lighting LED's you see shining through the cup holders. You can see them in the lower right of schematic on E20/18

Now if you have Code 301 - which is the Smoker package, you get the "R3 Front cigarette lighter with ashtray illumination". What I don't see on the circuit however is any reference to a light or LED so I'm not sure where the illumination reference comes into play.

I don't have the smoker package (as evident by my earlier posted pics) but I do have illumination where the ashtray would normally sit. The light itself looks to me like an incandescent (not LED). On the circuit you can see it's all bundled under the CODE 876, which makes sense, but again - I can't spot where that ashtray light or whatever they call it lives.

The N10/6 controller appears to handle all those lighting features but there's no mention of that compartment or ashtray light in any of the docs.

Sorry.. I'm stumped, but I'm fairly sure if you have 876 and 877 you'll probably see lighting that's same as my pics.

Perhaps in other countries, but I don't think that would be true for the US. And as Stan commented, the ranks of smokers in the US is becoming less and less every day. Certainly fewer Americans smoke today than in Europe, yet we still get ashtrays and "stinky" lighters. Why, I have no clue???

OK.....Now that's just weird. I have a very nicely optioned 2016 C300 Sport, with Interior package, which includes Ambient Lighting and I have no lighting in my cup holders. I wonder if there's a setting that turns them on and off? I did see that I have opening for lights where you have lights, but mine are most definitely not lit.

Well now I just feel stupid. I don't drive too often at night and had completely forgotten to check my cup holders the next time I got in my car at night, but low and behold, they are indeed illuminated with the same color as the ambient light color I selected. It's very subtle and I just never noticed it.
