Diesel mpg question 220/250 d or bluetech UK

Hi guys. Had my C250d Estate for 4 months and done around 6k miles. Ever since I've had it the mpg has been hugely disappointing.

Would love to hear what you guys have been getting to see if they are all rubbish or just mine. I don't drive in rush hour traffic and generally use A and B roads. Driving style is efficient as I can be while keeping up with traffic.

Day to day mpg: 37 to 40
Long distance motorway: 42 to 45

Is it me or is this rubbish? I have been known to see 28 to 32 when venturing into the city.

If I drive normally without worrying about mpg a day to day average would be about 35.

C300 diesel hybrid
I have a C300 diesel hybrid (same engine as C250). If I try hard, don't let the rpm go above 2k then I can achieve ~52 mpg, mixed driving. Today I selected sport+ for 20 miles and achieved 32mpg driving briskly. Overall I'm also a bit disappointed that I really have to try hard to average more than 45. I guess 200+ hp has to come from somewhere

Hmm, my C220 seems to give me better results - not great (and nowhere near the "official" figures, of course).

Overall (from the trip comp) I have got 45.9 mpg over the last 4,000 miles. Most days consist of half a dozen short trips (2 miles, or so, round trip) taking people to/from work, so hardly getting warm - driven in semi-urban areas. At weekends we will take longer trips (50-60 miles) across country (not motorway) - I certainly don't hang around, but I'm not a boy-racer though - I do like Sport/Sport+ or manual.

The overall consumption is pretty much identical to my manual W204 C220 I had before, so given this one is Auto, I am pretty impressed, TBH. Well, maybe I had just "managed my expectations"....

By way of comparison, I'm getting pretty much those figures in a C200 (petrol). Sometimes a bit higher for motorways if there's 50mph stretches.
I don't really try for MPG and tend to have a 50/50 mix of Sport/Comfort.

Let it run in a bit more to get the best from it. I complained to my dealer about the mpg on my C200 petrol. Getting 26 on the commute (city stop start) and 38 on a run. The dealer gave me a diesel to try and I got 36 and 48 respectively, not what I expected and I'm glad I saved the money and went for the Petrol given the mileage I do. What I'm saying is that this isn't a small eco car and despite the figures they quote, it all depends on your journeys, mileage, temps and the way you drive.

I've had mine a year 16K on the clock

I get about 35-40 mixed driving and on a long run I can get around 60.

Quite disappointing really but overall a lovely car.

C250d Estate AMG Line
C250d Estate here, 3 months, 3300 miles, 6 fill ups, mostly motorway about 50mph in Eco mode. Last tank mostly stop start urban.

Average of 44.6 MPG with a best tank of 47.5 MPG and worst 38 MPG (The urban one)

Was hoping for a number starting with 5, will see what more mileage brings.

C220 Bluetec
Had mine(C220 Bluetec) since Jan 15 done 22K miles at an average of 56.36 MPG admittedly more than 50% is motorway but a lot is rural as we live in Norfolk (No motorways).

Average is from actual fill-ups not from the car but the car is very accurate anyway

The one thing I have noticed is as soon as winter diesel appears at the pumps at the end of OCT the MPG drops significantly, just as it went up in April ish

Hmmmm... Looks like mines not far off the going rate which is a dissapointment.

Getting 60ish% of the official mpg on a 2 litre diesel is poor game. Really was expecting to breeze into the 40's day to day and 50's on a long run.

This car is the best official mpg of any car I've ever had but yet it's the worst mpg I've had from a 2l diesel. Mpg real to official % deficit wise it's the worst I've ever had by some margin.

Thats 55+Mpg very similar to mine, I would suggest that Jsmills has a problem, I have had over 62 on a decent motorway run.

Not likely to be a problem. More likely due to the many factors that hit mpg, temps, trip length, driving style, traffic etc

I can get near the official figure if I drive like an OAP, if I drive normally no chance and if I drive aggressively well I may as well have a Lamborghini.

I drive faster than allowed, chase BMW's and scare Audi drivers. My heated seats are often on the highest level.

I've got 1,500 on my C250D and am currently regularly getting 55-60mpg on motorways and about 40-45mpg around town.

I drive in Comfort mode pretty much all the time, and I'm finding the instant fuel usage option on the small screen behind the steering wheel quite interesting, and helpful in looking at how I drive around town.

EQE 500 4MATIC replacing EQC 4matic AMG line P
Am across the channel but thought it worthwhile letting you have my experience, over 7500 miles the average is 44mpg. I have seen it as high as 52mpg on longer trips. I tend to leave it in comfort but use sport when the road is twisty. I do stick to the speed limit on cruise or limiter which is a measly 90k or 56mph here. I had a quick blast at 130k 82mph on a motorway tuesday then drove into le mans and got 6.2 l per 100k 45mpg over a 200k round trip 135 mph.

I am pleased as mine is the 250d auto but with 4matic permanent 4 wheel drive. I never did believe the published figures but on the right journey with little stop start or hills and with warm temps it can be quite frugal especially given its power. I think driving conditions in the uk really make it hard to achieve good mpg too much traffic and too many traffic controls meaning lots of stop starts.

I also have a C200 AMG model. I get around 28 MPG in the city and today I drove 310 miles on the Dutch motorway combined with the German autobahn. Average speed of 70 mph and I managed to get around 34 MPG. Here is a video of my c class.

Well that's pretty good and what I was expecting. My car doesn't have the ability to go into the 50's even on a motorway cruise.

Something I do find and don't know if it's related is to keep a light throttle to maintain a speed be it 30 mph, 40, 50mph the instantaneous mpg drops to around 15mpg is yours similar?

Also I need to travel around 8-10 miles in a morning before I can touch 30mpg. I live in the countryside no traffic and open 50-60mph roads.

I'm not surprised if it is faulty as its already had a new aux belt and bearings due to a squeak at idle, update on the fuel pump due to not smooth crawling, command updates due to phone sync issues and mpg issues since day 1.

Diesels are well known for terrible mpg on shorter journeys. They are actually worse than petrol on journeys under 15 miles. They come into their own when you do more than 15.

I tend to brake early or coast up to lights etc. which is how I was taught in a day's course I went on, funnily enough by a rally driver.

He told me that there are more ways of slowing down than slamming on the brakes at the last minute, an also by not slowing own too fast, you don't have to accelerate back up to speed as much as well.

I do use sport and sport+ as well though when I want some fun

Try using the real time fuel usage guage to see how you are doing and where the mpg is at its worst and best once you've had the work done

Hi,

In Australia we only have the C250 Bluetec; what is the difference between this and the C250d? I just thought it was naming conventions, being both diesel, but it sounds like they are different models?

As far as I know it is only a naming convention. The change seems to have taken place in the UK ~mid 2015 - C250 Bluetec before and C250d after. At that time there were some minor changes on the option prices e.g. ash wood trim is now standard on AMG line, but I can't see any difference in the technical spec of the engines. Same story with the C300 Bluetec hybrid which is now the C300h. I have the former and I do think there are far too many letters on the back of the boot lid, C300h only looks a lot cleaner.

thanks for your replies.

Just for comparison on fuel economy, my W203 C220cdi, i can get down to 3.8L/100km at best, but regularly see 4.1L/100km on 40km motorway trips at tail end of peak time.

I'd imagine the efficiency wouldn't change that much unless I use the ECO mode.

Hello same here, C250 amg line estate getting 40mpg average with a bit round town and work runs of 70 mile round trips on B roads. Really disappointed as my last car BMW 5 series estate 3.0ltr got better than this with book figures of 47mpg combinedz

What is the quoted book figures for a C250d amg line estate on 19" anyone??

I am asking mercedes to look at it on next visit. Anyone had any joy with it yet?

I had a c220 courtesy and it seemed a quite a bit better.

My figures:
Trip total (in kilometers) since mid March 2015, when I picked up the car, is 7,800 km.
On board computer (since reset when I picked up the car): 10.2 Liter per 100 kilometers = 23.06 Miles Per Gallon (US)
Actual figures (fuel station receipts): Total liters: 749.56 liters => 9.61 Liter per 100 kilometers = 24.47 Miles Per Gallon (US)
I've driven around 1000 km on highway (max 120 km/h), rest is city driving (mostly 2x 6km commuting, with bumper-to-bumper traffic).
I turn off ECO Stop/Start as soon as I start to drive.
AC is on (always) 20°C (auto mode).
I drive 95% in Comfort Mode. 5% in S+ (and some aggressive driving) when possible.
18" AMG wheels with runflats (SUMMER: CONTINENTAL CONTISPORTCONTACT 5 SSR, WINTER: PIRELLI SOTTOZERO 3).
I only use premium diesel, and I go for a full tank everytime (mainly Total Excellium Diesel, and I tried a couple of times Shell V-Power which is of the same quality).
What do you think of these figures? This is the first time I actually cared and decided to pull the numbers (thanks to this thread)
