If you've been waiting to get your hands on a diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz C300d or a GLC oil-burner, you're going to have to keep doing that. For a while.

AMG in drag
Drove a W205 C220d in Germany for a week. It had a very(!) noisy and unrefined engine.

All diesel certification of German cars is delayed due to VW dieselgate. I think summer of 2017 is too optimistic.

Not something 'd be holding my breath for.. (no diesel smoke pun intended).

Nice torque and roll on accelaration, BUT they are not the most refined diesel powerplant out there, and the high output 2.1l 4 pot is about maxed out so forget tweaking it up without some more involved mods... DBOC tried and it wasn't there for the taking..

Diesel is for trucks not high performance vehicles. I'm not sure why so many guys get all fanboy about diesel German cars. They are downright rabid about em over on the Bimmer forum.

2017 bmw diesels just got certified.

i doubt its a big deal anyway, gas is so cheap these days and diesel sedan demand isn't exactly huge that i'm guessing most people don't care and mercedes isn't in a huge rush

In its current form that is correct, however the all new generation diesel engine (2.0L) dropping in Oz in the new E E220d will be pushed through the range very shortly. Lots of tweaking available

After having a 4cyl diesel W204, I vowed never to touch it again.

Fuel economies are only noticeable on highways. In urban CBD with start/stop traffic, the diesel fuel economy was hardly worth it.

Diesel drivers are mostly not focused on the "high performance" aspects of a German car such as Mercedes (at least I'm not). I want the driving characteristics, looks , and feel of a German car with range and mileage of a diesel.

For those of us who drive a ton for business or pleasure, 600+ miles to a tank of fuel is a real nice option you can not get with gasoline.

Diesel is great for people who do 80-90% of their driving on the interstate. You get the car into the massive sweet spot that the torque band provides and just cruise. I learned to drive on a diesel W124, and I miss that feeling on the highway. Maybe with the new turbo engines, the difference is less apparent because they make more torque.

But diesel for city driving is a bad idea. The engine isn't designed for short trips and frequent stop and go.
