S63/65 Steering Wheel Retrofit

S63/65 Steering Wheel Retrofit
Decided to make some aesthetic changes to my steering wheel, and I gotta say it looks a lot more upscale than the standard C class steering wheel. And before the haters come in, I didn't buy the AMG Steering wheel because I hate the alcantara-only option for the steering wheel. Hopefully, this mod will show that it is possible to swap out these parts, and so you won't have to resort to those ugly *** stickers on your steering wheel that look classless and super tacky. /end rant
Credits to vic viper's guide on swapping out the cover and buttons to the S-class steering wheel: https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...wheel-mod.html
Few things to note:
-If you plan to swap only the cover and keep the airbag, the S-class airbag cover isn't a perfect fit with the C-class's airbag. You will need to cut part of the edges of the S-class cover to have the plastic slide into the clamps properly.
-The AMG insert isn't a perfect fit with the sport wheel, as the back cover isn't completely flush with the wheel. This is due to the lack of real clips on the bottom of the back cover; there are 2 prongs you will need to stick through the rubber of the steering wheel, so have some thing you can poke through rubber to make it fit.
All parts are OEM. Unfortunately, I was impatient and didn't take a lot of pictures. Here is what the bottom cover of the AMG steering wheel looks like out of box
Prereqs: flat-bottom sport steering wheel
1. There are two T20 torx screws behind the bottom cover. They are around the middle.
2. Once unscrewed, you can pull the back cover off from the front piece.
3. There are 4 T20 torx screws holding the front cover onto the wheel. Two are located on the very bottom where the cover meets the wheel. The other two are on the top where the cover meets the center airbag container.
4. You want to be careful when removing the front cover as there are hooks shoved into the rubber that keeps it in place.
5. Align the back cover to the wheel, and make note of where the prongs will pierce the rubber part of the wheel. You will need to piece the rubber to allow the prongs to go through.
6. Put on the front cover first. The AMG front cover uses the same screw holes as the sport steering wheel cover.
7. There are two clips (see unassembled picture) towards the top of the cover pieces that will need to come together. Towards the bottom, there are also clips that will also need to be aligned.
8. Push the prongs through the rubber. You will hear the top clips snap together.
9. Screw in the bottom cover into the front cover at the top. You will use up the remaining 2 T20 torx screws.
Finished product:
I'm not the best at making guides especially since I don't have pictures haha I hope this was helpful

Love it! Money spent for aesthetics on something like the steering wheel that's always in your line of sight is well spent IMO. Greatly increases your enjoyment of the car. Hmmm. Now I want one.

Very nice! Great write-up
Been eyeing this swap myself but I didn't think about upgrading the controls until now. How much were the parts? I've seen just the AMG piece on eBay for ~$200.

Bottom AMG cover was around 130 total. I saw the Ebay ones, and I even asked if they could give me a discount for them, but they refused. I got a VIN for a 2016 CLS63S from my service advisor and purchased them online. A friend at the Naples dealership then hooked me up with shipping. So in total, it wasn't cheap, but I think I got a fairly good deal for them

Found the bag assy OEM on eBay for $319, with either black or grey/white stitching. I like the contrast of the white but the car's stitching is black. Hard to tell in your pics which color. Also, no lock getting the silver buttons. How'd you source those?

I think black would look best and match the stitching on the rest of the wheel.

Yeah, that's the one I mentioned earlier that I was thinking about. I think I'm going to stop fartin around and get it.
And I know we don't agree on much around here, but I do agree 100% with you on the value of aesthetic mods in the cockpit area. Looking at and holding the wider AMG trim everyday over the standard one is worth a couple hundred bucks a million times over.. I'm gonna skip the upgraded buttons. I don't mind the black plastic ones, myself.

If you opt for the airbag-less cover, there won't be a part number for it, as mercedes doesn't make a standalone one. You'll have to scavenge Ebay for it.

Also I believe the AMG steering wheel might have a slightly thicker wheel than the sport one, so that might explain the fitment issue as well

Can you take some more pics showing the final fitment, please? I want to see what you're talking about when you say "Isn't completely flush to the wheel." Is it a noticeable thing or is it not really a big deal?

Ok, I rounded up all the bits on EBay. OEM switches were $150 shipped. Originally ordered the white stitched unit but I sent the guy a message requesting the other one (he lists both). I think I'll be good either way. I have the white interior so the white stitched bag probably would look good too.

I am only interested in doing the lower/under cover piece with AMG script. It looks like the instructions above relate solely to that aspect of this mod and not the other (airbag cover and silver buttons), correct? Also, what did you use to pierce the steering wheel rubber?
