Anyone else concerned with just the normal wear and tear that the turning off and on does to the motor and other components?
If you consider the starter alone (I'm assuming this is used to start the car after ECO shutoff), there are only so many times it is going to work, so this is accelerating the breakdown of the starter. In addition, I've always understood that starting your engine creates additional wear and tear.
So I'm more concerned with the wear and tear to the components than I am about the minimal gas mileage savings.
It stands to reason that the Starter motor has a finite number of cycles in it before it fails, so you're right...it likely hastens the failure to some extent. I never own a Benz once it's out of warranty but for those planning to hang on to theirs it's a consideration.

From what I can gather this little made up unit unit sends the canbus a signal just like you pressing the button to turn off the stop start, every time you start the car, then if you want the stop start feature for any reason ( I dont know why), then you can press the button to activate it, the way it should have come from the factory, as a option that you can activate if wanted.
I would say that the $150 OBD dongle does the same thing by sending a command to the canbus to deactivate stop start at start up just the same signal as if the button was pressed.
We all know you can use your hand, finger, mind control, whatever.
But I think the whole exercise of this thread was to find a way to deactivate it permanently for those who think that it should not have been a forced option, I myself dont like it, in my Merc I push the button, but in My Smart MHD which does a lot of short trips, stop start driving (having to start the car up to 20 times a day), I chose to use this little board to deactivate it, cost me like $9 AU ($4.50 US) to throw together, it does not alter any of the workings of the car just sends the signal to switch off, I dont have to think about it, I dont forget it, it just works, the way it should have come rather than just being on when I start.

I would have preferred that it had a switch in the dash to activate the option permanently or deactivate permanently, or a option in the menu like so many other options that I can program myself, we all know its there to show that the manufacturer is trying to make the car produce less emissions, im sure they dont care really how much fuel you use and the cost savings of having it are minimal, in the smart over its lifetime I might save $200, but it would cost me much more in maintenance by having it.

I agree with you on this one 100%. Some people think that their driving style fits and should fit everyone else and their egos feel the need to preach to other people just like how smokers, drunkards, addicts get preached at every day. I too have to start my engine more than 30 times a day. There are times when I have to go down and into my car three times in 10 minutes. There are also times that other people have to drive my car and wouldn't know to do that, and then complain to me later on saying that the A/C is not working, simply because the car started blowing air because the engine shut off while they are stuck in traffic under a very hot weather.
So for the ignorant egoist people here who thinks the start-stop is a good thing and it's as simple as pushing a button, try driving your car in a county where the traffic is 10 times worse that in Europe and North America.
Don't preach to people and let them do what they want to do with their cars, period.
